Have decided to upgrade from my 550D to the above. Wanted to go full frame 6D but budget wont stretch that far to include lenses.
General photography but mainly landscape and travel (nothing fast) so what would be my best options for around $1000 in New Zealand? Have been looking at 18-135 USM or 24-105 F4 L mk1but not sure about using latter on an APSC. Already own EFS 10-18 plus 50 1.8, 18-55 and 55-250 old kit lenses.
Going round in circles trying to get best bang for buck with maximum coverage, best quality and fastest lens. Worried about ending up with 'jack of all trades, master of none'. Pretty sure it is going to be new as our second hand market is minimal down here in NZ. What do you think would be the best way to go?

Not currrently a Canon user, but from all I've read that 24-105mm f/4 is a great lens, esp. if you might upgrade to full frame at some future time. Good luck.

I would recommend the 18-135 USM for your set up. I currently have a 600D (my wife has the 550D) she has the old 18-55 and 55-250 lenses which I gave her. I now have the 10- 22, 50 f/1.8, 60mm macro, 18-135mm (my default) and 70 -300mm and a Samyang 8mm fisheye. I've also just ordered a refurb 80D which is still in transit. I have other lenses, but the ones I've listed live in my grab bag. I believe that you will be happy with the 18-135, it will be more versatile than the 24-105 on an APS-C camera for general 'walk around' capability. I do not believe that you will miss the 18-55 much.

Good luck

I currently use the 24-105 on an APS-C camera and love it. The L series gives a sharper image and you will find your keeper rate increases. This will give you the equivalent view of a 38-168 and in most cases this will cover your bases. For years I used non L lenses and then one fateful day I pulled the trigger on one and became an instant convert. As most people will tell you here, put your money into the glass.

I was a Canon guy for a long time since recently. During that time after much experimentation and trial, I settled on the 24-105L and found that it was the best balance of size, speed and quality. Of course I was shooting on full frame (6D), so in your case it will be 38-168mm equivalent on APS-C, so you may miss a little on the wide side. Your existing 10-22 could fill that gap.

I have played with the 18-135 and like the compacted and "quietness" of that lens, but as user rjaywallace pointed out, the 24-105 can stay in your bag when you finally upgrade to a full-frame.

The "L" series lens is a great lens that will work great on a crop sensor camera. However, due to the conversion factor I personally think that 24 mm is a bit restrictive on the wide angle end. Still usable, but at least for me 18 mm would be an improvement worth considering. All in all, either lens mentioned would be a good choice, just something else to consider. Good luck and good shooting.

Have used the 18-135, both the original and upgraded, and have not been disappointed. Flexible enough for most situations. Great lens for travel to grab those quick shots that you will treasure. Sharp enough and can be sharpened more in post processing if needed.

I have always bought EF lenses even before I had full frame cameras. They work fine on crop frame cameras and if you ever add a full frame (as I did) all your lenses are compatible with your new camera.

We hogs are great about how to spend other people's money.
For a Canon crop sensor camera, in my experience, the best all around lens is the 15-85 EF-S. The 24-105, while a great lens, is simply not wide enough on a crop sensor body in shooting interiors. The 15-85 is a quality glass, one of the top 3 Canon lenses for crop sensor bodies.

I upgraded from a Canon 500D to an 80D with the 18-135 when the latter combination came out last year. I have also used (but don't own) the 24-105 f4L. I think the latter is technically the better lens, but I generally prefer the 18-135. It is in my view quite good and with the 24-105 I always want a little more reach or a wider angle. With the 18-135 I am usually happy with just one lens, while with the 24-105 I'm usually trying to decide what other lens or lenses I will want with me. Of course it all depends on what kind of shooting you do and how much weight you're comfortable carrying.

I have the 18-135. It came as a kit lens on my 70D. I have also purchased the 24-105. Both lenses perform very well. I have to agree, however, that the 18-135 is an excellent walk-around lens. I use it quite a bit for pet photography (mainly candid) as I volunteer to take pictures at a local animal shelter. I also have an 80D and both lenses perform equally well on it. Can't go wrong with either one.

Exactly, the 18-135, which I received as a kit lens when I purchased my 7D MKII is an outstanding lens on a crop sensor body.

I really like the the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 C - then you may also be able to swing the new Canon 70-300 II nano lens to go with it - ditch your kit lenses .....
