I think that we need to define what can be truly justified as to what the term "defense of the United States" means. Is it suspecting that a rogue country possesses weapons of mass destruction? Is it the perception that at some point a country could deliver critical damage to our shores or someone else's? Is it a decision for the UN? We have dealt with some difficult situations since WW2 and there is certainly room for thought.

..pretty simple, really. This is what is necessary to defend the USA:
1) counting our armament sales, we must produce more weaponry than the rest of the world combined.
2) We must spend as much as the rest of the world combined on military (we're down to 46%, because of that pussy, Obama)
3)* We must have more bases in more places than any other country ever in the history of the world. (Currently, we are down to only about 800 foreign bases.)
4) We must have the absolute coolest s**t, except maybe for the Israelis.
