There is no one way to shoot anything.

The first image was at ISO100, 1/125s, f6.3, 400mm

The second at ISO400, 1/200s, f5.6, 420mm (300 w/TC)

The third at ISO 400, 1/2500s, f5.6, 180mm

Different times, conditions and cameras but all work to some degree.

I neglected to mention that these were all hand held.

A handheld at 400mm at 1/125 is amazing. You have steadier hands than I do.

The Nikon 80-400G VR is only 3.5 pounds. Surely just about anyone can handle that.

Uh yeah. That's why some lenses have tripod mounts.

Normally I don't shoot the moon with these settings, but I was testing out ISO Auto in manual mode.
Shot handheld with the Sigma 150-600 Sport with the TC-1401 tele-converter, on a hazy evening.

Thanks to everyone for their input, have used the suggestions of faster shutter speed starting at 200 and f8 and 200 iso and working from there depending on the conditions, getting better photos now

If you are interested in including the landscape, look for the times when sunset/moonrise or moonset/sunrise are closest together; that way you are not dealing with a very bright moon against very dark surroundings.

There are usually two or three (including moonset in the morning) right around the full moon dates. Here is a good site for reference with which to plan:

Below was shot early morning on July 9 just as the sun rose enough to hit the top of Mt Adams in the distance and to reflect off the windows of the home in foreground.

That is a very very nice image.

Did you try other exposures?
The moon is lit by the sun, so you don't need a 30 sec exposure.
When in doubt, experiment. Did you google your subject? I'm pretty sure others have shot the moon before and blogged about it.
