Beautiful hawk. Great shot. Did you have a telephoto lens for it?

Thank you for the nice kudos, Doug. They are very much appreciated. I was using a Canon 400 mm telephoto lens for that shot. It's what I use much of the time for my bird pictures.

Great shot ! .......these guys are hard to get a shot of out in the open ! 8-)

Thank you imagemeister. You are absolutely right about them being difficult to get a shot of out in the open. I have very few shots of Cooper's hawk that I'm really happy with.

Terrific photo. You really caught the eyes. According to a local bird rescue sanctuary, cooper's hawks are the only raptor they will not try to rescue, because cooper's are so ornery that they absolutely do not tolerate being in captivity. I am told that we have many cooper's around here. They frequently take pigeons in my and my neighbors's yards. An impressive species.

seniormomentnw...Thank you for the very nice compliment. You are absolutely right about them being ornery raptors. They truly are common hawks, but due to their secretiveness, they are not often seen by people. And most folks don't really know what a Cooper's hawk is. They wouldn't recognize one if they saw it.

I was out at the college (FSU) photographing the Canada geese, when this young Cooper's hawk stopped by for just an instant. I fired off a few quick rounds, and instantly he left, just as suddenly as he arrived. I have photographed him one other time at this same spot.

Nice shot Mike.
