Is my pc getting ready to bite the dust? A couple days ago I noticed a strange noise coming from my pc. It was louder than just the fan running. At first, I thought it was completely dead because I couldn't even bring up my desktop. When I turned it off and back on I was finally able to go online, but it was incredibly slow. Once I got online, the page I was on would flicker and show my desktop, for a second or two, then return to the site I was on. A while ago, I was trying to scroll down a page and the page would jump to the very bottom then back to the top. I finally just gave up. All sites I'm trying to go on keep getting a "not responding" message. I finally gave up and clicked "kill pages". I'm using wired connection pc with Windows 7 Professional and Google Chrome. Anyone have some advice to offer, other than bashing the pc with a sledge hammer?
The pc is a refurbished HP and I never have really liked it but it served my purposes most of the time. I would appreciate any feedback.

Hard drive noise? Fan noise! If course isn't cooled down by fan that will make slow itself down as a protection. My first guess I'd Hard Drive open case and list carefully, place a screw driver on the drive, and place your ear on it to hear, then try fan just watch out for your hair if more than a few inches long.Actually I have a stethoscope I bought cheap at Harbor Freight that works great for this.

P.S. if you shop around d you can find some good deals on desktops and laptops! I am going to assume you want to edit photos,so buy the most ram as possible and a Terrabie or two of HD.

I have a fan turned on and facing the pc modem because it gets hot to the touch. I always shut down and turn the switch off when I'm through so nothing stays on and gets worn out. I think it may be time to shop for another pc. I don't think I'll go with refurb this time.
Thanks for responding.

Check the CPU and power supply fans. A lot of Bios will have CPU temp and fan speed. See if yours does. A new cpu fan is cheap to replace.

If the PC gets "hot" to the touch then the fans, which ever one (suggests cpu fan as system slows down) it should be only a little warm, there several great desktops out there for photography work, if you can afford one, get a "GAMER" computer, they are loaded, lots of ram (huge amounts) really big HD's, large ram Video cards, but with all that a bit pricey? Did I mention super cooling system?

Hard drive is dying. Save off your data ASAP!

Will do. I'm at the library now because my pc froze up and won't do anything online. I can still use it off line. I have saved my photos on external hard drive, flash drives, and memory cards. I can re-install the few programs I'm using if I need to purchase a new pc. My modem gets very warm but the pc remains cool to the touch, so I think it's my hard drive failing. Time to shop around, I guess.
Thanks for responding to my post.

Done. I loved my first refurbished pc. I have never been too happy with this one. Will be shopping around now.
Thanks for responding to my post. You have verified what I suspected all along.

Not sure what you have for a PC now, but if it just the hard drive, that's a cheap fix! But on the other hand a nice hi speed computer is a great asset.

It's an HP refurb ordered from Walmart online site for $179.00. It had a problem hard drive replaced less than 2 weeks after I bought it.

If you buy a new computer also buy a HD case usb type, take your old HD out of the computer, place it the case, try to use it as a data transfer device! It may be slow but you will be able to take data off in steps. As long as you using the snae programs the data should have no trouble working in the new computer!

Anybody care to guess how many dust bunnies are inside the computer?

Way to many for the computer dusting fairy to manage I am sure!
