Currently have d610 and d7100 and would like to upgrade to d810 which is currently $1998 refurb. Would that be a prudent move, I take landscape and events, sports. Trying to get into portrait. For sports I do use canon 7d mark 2

I'd hold off a bit longer until the D850 hits the street, driving down the cost of the D810 even more. But is money is not a consideration, go for it...

I had a d7000 and moved up to the D810. I use it for nature, landscape and some action. Works extremely well in low light and photos can be enlarged as big as you need

Stay with the D610 and learn how to use it. There is nothing to gain by an upgrade.

Your full-frame D610 is already a great camera for portraits ... Probably more important is what lens(es) do you have?

Thank you. For some photo buffs its all about the equipment and not the technique. They need to remember that the finished photo is the end result, not what they used to take it.

That is a great price for a great camera. I have had mine for a couple of years now, and it has a been the best camera I have ever owned.

Why do you say there is nothing to be gained by an upgrade? The D610 has 24.3 MP and the D810 has 36.3 MP. It seems to me there is significant gain to be had.

If it is refurbished by Nikon, I would say yes; otherwise no. At $2,000 it is over than $1,000 less than the D850 will cost, and at your level of knowledge you will probably not get the value in use for the additional $1,000 you will spend.

Like I said, it's all about the equipment. You don't need 36mp to produce good photos. You need to learn to compose in the viewfinder, then you don't need to crop.

Using that logic, I can make great photos with an 8 MP camera as well, so why bother getting anything better?

Pixel count is not the only thing that effects IQ. Many factors should be considered when evaluating desirability of an upgrade.

I moved from a 7100 to a 800E ..to the 810 ...so glad I did .. have had it since preorder days when it first came out ..the good glass must be used ..! That being said ... only the photographer can make great photos .. nothing wrong with a 610 .., , but an 810 is so much fun ..

The 850 will have wifi .., tilt screen with twice the clarity resolution ... poss back lit buttons ..40+ mega pix ...and an updated brain ...increased low light ... yes I will get one ..

For portraits, you don't need a 36mp camera.
People really don't want to see their pores.
I have a Nikon D810 but for studio portraits, I use a DX sensored Fuji S5 pro.
Fuji says it's a 12mp sensor, but it has a special sensor with 2 pixels per site so it's a bit misleading. I use it for the amazing skin tones.
Your D600 is far more than enough.
More inportant for portraits is lighting & posing.
That will make the biggest improvement in your photography.

For other things, the 810 is amazing.
Good at low light, landscapes.
Not really a sports camera.
