I currently have a 7D II that I am very happy with. Perhaps is just GAS, but I am thinking of getting a full frame camera. Most of my lenses are L's so they would fit. Would I notice an IQ improvement with the full frame and which one? I like the idea of dual memory cards on the 5DIII, but the technology is already several years old. Recommendations? Thanks in advance. I shoot mostly wildlife and grandkid's sporting events. I would still keep the 7DII. Should I just keep the 7DII and be happy or add a FF to my equipment?

You have a camera and the lenses specialized on "wildlife and grandkid's sporting events" ... why do you think you need a new camera? Depending on your lenses, you'd probably be better served there ...

Keep the 7D II for the sports and wildlife, it outshoots the others in every way except low light conditions.

The 7D mk II is the ideal choice for wildlife and you already have that one. I never got a 5D mk III but I know a few folks who have one and they like their cameras. The mk III is getting long on the tooth technology wise but it is still a good solid camera. I personally have a 5D MK IV and a 5DSR. The mk IV is my general purpose full frame and the DSR is my high resolution specialty full frame. If you want a full frame, have a collection of EF lenses and don't want to shell out well over 3 grand, get the 6D mk II. It's an excellent camera and it has 2017 technology.

If you like the feel of your 7D ii, the body of the 5D iv (and probably the iii, but I haven't held one) is identical and the only controls difference I could see was a slight change to the trigger control on the back panel.

terpfan...I own a 7DII and a full frame 5DIII. I shoot pretty much all wildlife. I like the 7DII for the additional reach (1.6 crop factor), but prefer the full frame for image IQ. The noise factor is reduced substantially with the 5DIII, and I prefer the images I get with the full frame. If you can, I'd recommend keeping and shooting with both cameras.

Just out of curiosity. Did you have the 7Dii and add the 5Diii, or the other way around?

Actually I originally had a 7D, which was a great camera, but quite noisy. I then went to a 5DII and later a 5DIII. My 7DII is the more recent of them all.

I have the full frame canon 1ds mk3 and the crop 1dmk4. The full frame is real nice to have.

I have the 7DII and the original 6D full frame. The IQ is better on the 6D and Hi ISO performance. My biggest complaint on the 6D is the focus system. The focus system is better on the new 6DII but in reality not much because you have all of the focus points tightly in the center. That means you still have to focus and recompose most of the time. If your coming from the 7DII which has a better focus system and wider coverage, you'll probably be disappointed with any of the 6D's focusing system. If I were to choose between a 6DII or 5DIII, I'd take the 5DIII because of the wider spread on the focus points. Focus system is more important to me than any other feature on a camera because if a shot is out of focus, nothing else will matter. High ISO performance, FPS, IQ and everything else becomes irrelevant when a shot is out of focus. Hindsight, I should've bought the 5DIII instead of the 6D at the time. Don't get me wrong, I still love the IQ and high ISO performance of the 6D but spoiled with the 7DII focus system.

Two topics already mentioned carry the most weight in my mind. First, when shooting wildlife the crop sensor 7DII will provide more reach. Even if you have some fine long range lenses that will work on the full frame camera, they will get you closer due to the crop factor on the 7D. However, there is another trade off in that it works quite the opposite for wide angle.

The other factor is the focus system. I've held off for quite some time in moving up to a 6D, because the focus system just didn't seem to be up to the rest of the camera's features. I was thrilled when they came out with the 6DII and it's improved focus system only to find out that the focus points are grouped too much to the center of the frame, which negates much of it's real advantage, at least for me.

There are still some compelling reasons to want a full frame camera! So, to try to directly answer for question, I'd definitely keep the 7DII and think about finding a good, used 5DIII. That way you would have the best of both worlds and a variety of options when shooting. Good luck and good shooting to all.

I have a 7D MII and a 5D MIII. At most venues I carry both - mount my f/2.8 24 - 70mm II on the 5D MIII and the f/2.8 70 - 200mm II on the 7d MII. The two cover most opportunities. I love both!!. Of course the technology is a bit old, but I'm happy.

Newer tech doesn't promise better pictures. In some situations, it might make an image easier to make. Just check out Elena's work using her aged 5DIII. She proves it's the photographer not the gear.
