A follow up to my fly pic - the gnat. The gnat is about 1/8" long and the flower bud about 1/4" across. Nikon D200, Nikkor f1.4 50mm lens, shot at a distance of about 2 ft., handheld, f4, 1/500sec., iso-100.

Cool picture. I like the contrast between the out of focus purple flower and the sharp green leaves. I would like to see the little guy, the subject of the photo, in a bit more focus. Just my opinion.

The colors are terrific, but the lack of sharp focus is a detriment. I'd be tempted to take it even softer in post to turn it into an abstract., just because the colors are so great.

Thanks Steve. At about 2 ft. away I couldn't see any details so I just did a spray and pray with the autofocus on the gnat. I'm sure a macro lens could have gotten a sharper image, I'm not sure if a 50mm could have.

Thanks Minnie. I don't know if a 50mm lens could have resolved focus any sharper. The subject is about the size of a couple of bottom eyelashes. For super sharp detail I think you would need a macro lens and ring light setup. For a softer focused fly see my previous post.
