I thought these would be better than guns for college kids to take to the classroom for self defense.

We did too and spent a lot of time looking for "properly" shaped and strong enough tree branches with almost equally angled forks, and had many break. It wasn't until we were in our mid teens and later that Wham-O introduced factory made sling shots made from good knot-less wood and gum rubber bands. They were great, stronger and more accurate than the older home made models.

You bet they are great. I even have a folding one, handy for brushing draws for hunting, saves lots of walking. When younger we used to use golf balls for ammo, they work really well. Lots of fun and way more accurate than the old stick and inner tube "beany flippers" we used to make.

My father said that growing up in the southwestern part of Utah, he would use a "flipper" as he called it to hunt rattlesnakes. This was before he was 12 years old. After he was 12, he used a 22 caliber rifle.
