We still call it a Rev Counter. A Tachometer is a device fitted into a lorry/wagon to record the vehicle's speed, time in use and when stationary. It is used to ensure drivers don't exceed their hours of driving allowed.

A boot is an item worn on the feet.
A cracker is a biscuit or an item we have at Christmas.
A way in is an entrance to a building.
So on is an alternative to Et cetera.

A tachometer is a rev counter, A tachograph is a logging device recording the activities of a vehicle as described above

In Canada, one does not need to 'travel abroad', When we first drove to Ottawa, a town that has half of it in Ontario and half in Quebec. While driving in the Ontario half - where all the traffic signs are bi-lingual, we were somehow directed over the bridge to the Quebec half where all the traffic signs are French only. It took some time to find our way back to the Ontario side.

Look at your medical acronyms, they don't even make sense to someone without a medical degree or the associated disease. Many acronyms are made to associate with a product and promote that product even though they may or may not apply to other manufactures.
