I would want f 2.8 but it would then be too big and heavy and really really expensive.

A good, practical and reasonable reply. I am considering make the same choice.

Are you using it on a full frame camera or a DX? Yes, let us know how you like it. I ordered mine today after a long telcon with Nikon...

I ordered that lens and it's on the truck for delivery today. I ordered it because of the lighter weight, 9 rounded diaphragm blades, some weather sealing, fast focusing. It was a bit pricey so my expectations will be higher...

I ordered and received the new 70-300 mm lens. I immediately took it from the box like a kid at Christmas, installed it on my D750 and went to the back yard without checking out anything. I took a few shots of birds at 300 mm, put them on the computer, and was very disappointed with the image quality. On inspecting the lens I found that the VR had not been turned on. After turning on VR Sports I took a few more shots and was very pleased. I do not have the old 70-300 lens but I do have the Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 300MM f/4E PF ED. I compared photos with the new lens and the Nikon 300 mm prime lens at focal point 300 mm which is where I was primarily interested in while birding. This was a quick comparison of a handheld shot with each lens of the same Dove from about 35 feet. The new and first lens shown was shot at 1/1250 s, f5.6, and 1000 IS0; the prime lens was shot at 1/1250 s, f4, and 400 ISO. Both shots are AS IS. Both lens are very fast AF and about the same noise level. I am a happy camper!

We can't make a valid comparison unless the birds are in the same position!! LOL That's all good new since I just received mine this afternoon but haven't had a moment to try it out. Do you have an extender for your 300 mm prime?

This post may be a bit premature but I would like to have some feedback on the new Nikon AF-P Nikkor 70-300mm, f/4.5-5.6 E ED lens. My understanding is that it is a full frame lens and has a new auto-focus motor that is extremely fast. I would be using it initially on a D7100. Have any Hogs had a chance to try it? My intent is to replace an older 55-300mm lens that has the slowest focus in my arsenal.

In spite of what KR says, the irrefuteable fact is the FX lens is SHARPER and better made and if you are going to the trouble to spend bucks and if you value IQ, get the FX ! - the penalty? costs $300 more and is a bit heavier.

Because silly, with a FX lens on a DX body, you are only using the sharpest part of the lens, the center part. And besides, they are getting a further reach using a DX body, and they are using more EFFECTIVE MEGAPIXELS than they would get with a FX camera. That's why silly.

, and because it is a BETTER made lens with better IQ .....silly - there is a reason why the DX lens is $300 cheaper.

I ordered it late this afternoon from B&H. Due to their Saturday closing the order will be prepared on Sunday and shipped on Monday.

Yes I have a 1.4x, 1.7x and a 2x teleconverter. I can use them to extend my 300 mm prime lens, and they work beautifully. The weight of my D750 plus the extender is less or slightly more than 4 pounds, making the combination much lighter to carry around for several hours, compared to 6-8 pounds for a 600 mm zoom lens. The primary disadvantage is the loss of maximum aperture of the prime lens which is f4. It makes a difference in the early morning hours when birding, and where I normally need more light.

I The added reach others mentioned is only apparent, but I do like it. The crop factor makes it look like you have 450mm instead of 300mm. In reality, the magnification is still what you get with a DX 300mm lens, but the narrower angle of view essentially crops that image in the camera. So your image will come out better because the part you wanted anyway is covering more sensor [compared to having to crop down peripheral unwanted parts of the image].

Hi New to DSLR, so still learning a few things. (Or wanting to). I just came across this "crop factor" the other day while looking at a 70-200 FX zoom for a D7200 DX body. This is new to me. Can someone point me to an article that will explain this better? Thanks in advance

Thomas902 (http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-455805-1.html ) and I have the DX version. It is resonably priced, light weight and sharp. I have been using it in place of my heavier Nikon 70-300mm.

I got a chance to go out to the slough close by and get a few shots with the new 70-300 mm lens. It is a fine lens and I will be keeping it. BTW- it has a 5 year warranty. I am pairing with the Nikon D 7500 which is also a fine camera IMO. I am posting a couple of shots- I tried to pick a variety. I also shot with my GX8 and 100-400 lens. That is also a fine lens although slow. It is not the best lens in cloudy conditions which it was today so although I got some really nice shots, ISO was at 6400, 5000, 4000 :(
I probably could have dialed down the time. It handled the video very well. I digress.
