Hi Hogs,
I am looking at buying a Nikon D810, probably refurbished. In looking at various sites, I note that Adorama has them for $1,996 while B&H has them for $2,199, and they are $2,444 on the Nikon USA site. Since Nikon prices are usually set by the company and everyone is within a few dollars, does anyone have any information on why the differences in price. I know Nikon USA had them on sale for $1,999 earlier this year. Anybody know what gives?

A lot has to do with condition. I purchased a D800e from B and H about a year ago. Phenomenal price and condition. It was a few hundred less than Nikon had one listed.

Check Cameta Camera over on Long Island.... I have gotten 3 refurbs from them & saved over other outlets. My Refurbed D610 only had 5 clicks on it. Genuine Nikon refurbs as well.

Refurbs are not MAP priced, each and every dealer selling reburbs is free to set their own profit margins. If a dealer buys all of a certain model refurb from Nikon they do get substantial quantity discounts so there is a lot of room for potential customer discounts over Nikons "List" pricing.

Thanks for the info. So I should not infer that there is any difference in the refurbs, such as shutter count or physical condition of the camera body based on price. Is this correct?

Adramas are probably returns and/or floor models that have been inspected, cleaned up and had the firmware updated. Nikon does a thorough service and factory reconditioning.

I bought a Nikon D800 from Adorama and it had 5000 plus clicks. I wanted to send it back but they didn't have any other D800 refubs available. Next time I will ask shutter count before buying.

Unlike new cameras, Nikon lets dealers determine the price of refurbs, so shop around. Cameta is usually good, with a 1-year warranty.

Unless you get someone with a lot of time on his hands, they're not going to open a box, attach a lens, take a shot, and then use a computer to find the shutter count. Sellers of used cameras can tell you the count, but a dealer isn't going to unpack a factory-packed camera. How many would he have to go through to get you a low enough count? Would you want to receive a refurb that looked like it had been unpacked and repackaged?

What gives is that they were reducing the price around Christmas and throwing in a battery pack, that's when I pulled the trigger. Who know's when they will do that again. With the D850 due out soon, personally, I would wait cause the refurbished should drop along with the new when the D850 comes out.

From what I've read the D850 isn't going to be a replacement for the D810 but will be sold alongside it thus I doubt prices will come down.

Brand new Nikon D810 body only, never used $2,400 dollars. Includes battery powered camera hand grip, additional hand grip with flash attachment, lens hood, two straps. Purchased two D810's to shoot weddings but decided against it for health reasons. Keeping one and selling one. Orlando, Fl. Edazz57@gmail.com

Don't count on it, this coming holiday season they will offer a deal on the D810 and D850.

This is what I read. It may be that dealers will throw in add ons to sweeten the deal ( as many dealers will do) but , at this point, it isn't known whether the price of the camera, by itself, will come down.

I just bought the d810 from Adorama yesterday for the $1996. I had the same dilemma trying to decide who to go with and if I wanted to wait for the d850. I was looking at the Ken Rockwell site and his view on the two cameras. His recommendation was to buy the d810 and to buy from Adorama. I am sure he gets something for recommending them but I figure it is still his name on the line and should mean something to him. When I called Adorama they said they had several in stock. I heard from a pro that they work closely with Nikon in respect to referbs. I will have mine Tues or Wed and will let you know how many clicks I have on it. Someone mentioned they got one and it had 5,000 clicks. That still is not many clicks for a high end camera and remember the camera has just been refurbished by Nikon and has a 90 day warranty. I haven't wore out a camera yet I updated before that has ever happened.
