jerryc41 posted a link about someone who stole a gold plated lunar lander model from a museum...another sad example of the delinquency our "civilization" can produce. My son collects rare movies and gave me a copy of "Idiocracy" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiocracy (not to be confused with ideocracy). This movie is based on the premise that ignorant, parasitic people tend to reproduce in greater numbers than highly educated people and in hundreds of years, the average intelligence of the population will decline to the point where society can barely survive, let alone advance intellectually or morally. The movie's a satire but the theme is chillingly believable and anecdotally, jerryc41's link shows the kind of people out there ready to take the low road. And considering how we're dumbing down our educational system, perhaps we're already headed down that road. Thoughts?

Years ago there was a biology textbook that included that prediction, that the more educated and the more intelligent (not necessarily the same people) produced fewer children and that human intelligence would therefore decrease in time.

Dumb people being driven around by robotic vehicles. Until the robots are no longer willing to. Yes, that is our future if we are lucky enough to not destroy our planet first.

We are very lucky to be alive today. Things look like they are getting worse with environmental degradation and overpopulation. And our forebears had it much harder than we do today. This is the "Golden Age" for humanity. Enjoy it!

A concept (de-evolution) well developed for decades in the science fiction genre - many treatments given.
Also addressed more recently in music by Devo.............

It has always been true that a relatively small percentage of the population do much better than the majority. It is not unique to the USA. This exists in all countries and in all types of societies or governments. The dumbing down thing is by design and also not new. In strong statist governments the people are purposfully kept ignorant of the working of government and/or the situation in other countries. The progressive thinkers of the late 1800's and early 1900's had contempt for the declaration of independence and for the teaching of history. They saw this as a way to teach children the way that "things should be" rather than adhere to the ideas of our founding.

The Declaration Of Independence is nothing but a letter of complaint to Mad King George III. It has no force in law, and is NOT the foundation of anything. The Constitution Of The United States IS our foundation, and IS The Primary law here. Educationally challenged people are always confusing these two documents. If you are going to expound upon such matters, bother to learn what you are talking about.

It is the 'dumbing down' of politicians that is the real worry. Educated people 'see the faults in society' but can't do much about them. The ignorant don't care - till it affects them. Politicians are paid to find solutions to social ills but sadly 'haven't got a clue' as they remove themselves from real life.

This is not about 'My country' or 'Your country' ....it is about all countries. We do not need Politicians 'that understand the masses' (they all say they do that) We need Politicians that see education and free access to information as a fundamental right and put resources into the systems and standards that ensure 'the masses' learn from it.
Education is still the privilege of the few.....to the detriment of the many.

Loads of em hangout here on the Hog or have you not noticed? Check out the guys who feel the need to seek advice about buying a camera strap or inquire about taking a camera on an aircraft. Look at the standard of commenting and advice given on the For Your Consideration forum. Idiocracy is alive and well but worryingly appears to be welcomed in certain areas. Do not let it depress you just sit back and chuckle.

I think as you say the "dumbing down of politicians" is a reflection of a large segment of their base.

Yes - funny movie. I like the huge TV with ads filling most of the screen, somewhat similar to what we are starting to get today.
