I have just ordered a CF /USB reader so that I can transfer my pictures from my 20D from the card rather than using the usb cable. Having read a couple of threads on UHH I'm now confused which way is best.
So - a poll....
Which is best...?
1. Removing the CF card and using the reader? Pro's - faster, more secure, less chance of corruption. Con's - chance of damaging pins (error 99!), manual process
2. Using USB cable? Pro's - no chance of damage, automatic Con's - slower, possible corruption (if low battery etc.)
What do you think?

I switched to the second method though it shortens the time between battery charges a little. I found this method easier and less prone to damage the card
I have both. When in the field the small transfer card is easy to use on any computer. At home I have a 6 ft cord to plug into the camera and transfer to the computer. It's easier. Never had any problem with either.
Plus, I can use the cord and transfer and also delete individual photos that I obviously took with my eyes closed and mind at rest.

i use the card slots on my computer,,real fast and i've yet to have trouble.
I've always used a card reader. This lets me to continue working as the pictures are downloaded.
What does your manual say?? mine says 2
I have never used the cable. Card reader is much faster and doesn't run the battery down. That's all I need to know
Always use the cable, got two batteries ;-) ;-)
If you download via a cable, you are restricted to the camera manufacturer's software. Via a card reader, you can choose the download software you like.
Find one that saves/names/catalogs your photos in a manner that you prefer. I shoot with a Nikon but download with a Canon product via a card reader. That way files are stored by "date taken" and with Picasa open files are cataloged in Picasa and are available for immeadiate viewing/cropping etc. in the program I like.

card reader sent directly to externak hard drive. So far no issues, knock on wood.
Card reader. You don't have problems with bent pins using SD cards. If using CF cards, always be deliberate and careful when inserting the card into anything. I like using my card reader instead of the camera because I can't see using a $1700 camera as a card reader when a $12 card reader is faster, cheaper, doesn't wear down the battery, cheaper to replace if damaged and less wear and tear on the camera alltogether.
Sometimes it's best to use your picture editing software to invoke the imports or (downloads) of images if your sofware catalogs and organizes your images. If not, just let your computer download them to the folder of your choice.
I knew a guy that tried to jam a 3.5" floppy disc into a 5 1/4" drive. There's no guarantee that a cluts like this won't try to stick the card in the reader or camera backwards, or into the wrong card slot. Heck, my ex girlfriend stuck an SD card in her T1i backwards and I had a hell of a time getting it out. Lucky she didn't cause damage to one or the other but both were fine.

I've been using USB readers for years (never cable) and wouldn't be without my readers.
I use the card. No damage need occur if one is careful and easy when inserting it.
Everybody saying the battery would drain leads me to think there must be a lot of poor batteries as mine definately dont.
