I am not completely new to UHH so if this is out of place I am sorry, it just felt like the BEST place to post a few words. When I joined back in March I had two goals. I wanted to learn how to take better pictures, and I wanted to learn what camera would fit me well.

UHH as a group, has such an amazing wealth of knowledge, camraderie and passion in more areas than just photography that I was blown away by how easy it is to fit in and learn and share. Thank You truly thank you all!

Well from my 110 pocket camera to my Maxxum 9i I was always a huge Minolta fan. That lead me to Sony, waaaay out my price range. So it was Nikon or Canon. I decided on the Nikon D7200. Still a little steep since I was going to want more than just the basics and I had a deadline. My mom's 50th anniversary was yesterday. So for now it is the P900. I know it has drawbacks. I can hear the vacuum of multiple intakes of breath. I will always be more hey that's cool click I can remember it forever, than how can I make this artistic. I have never even used Photoshop not sure if I ever will, I love what some of you can do to a picture I am just not that interested in that part of the hobby.

So I am learning a lot! UHH is one site I visit EVERY day. I love it here and I am VERY thankful to whomever is responsible for the work that goes into keeping this wonderful resource available to people like me.

Learn to see your camera settings on your computer. Here are a few things to help you climax your expertise.

The Twelve elements listed below are in accordance to their importance.

1. IMPACT
2. TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE
3. CREATIVITY
4. STYLE
5. COMPOSITION
6. PRESENTATION
7. COLOR BALANCE
8. CENTER OF INTEREST
9. LIGHTING
10. SUBJECT MATTER
11. TECHNIQUE
12. STORY TELLING

Impact is the sense one gets upon viewing an image for the first time. Compelling images evoke laughter, sadness, anger, pride, wonder or another intense emotion. There can be impact in any of these twelve elements.

Technical excellence is the print quality of the image itself as it is presented for viewing. Retouching, manipulation, sharpness, exposure, printing, mounting, and correct color are some items that speak to the qualities of the physical print.

Creativity is the original, fresh, and external expression of the imagination of the maker by using the medium to convey an idea, message or thought.

Style is defined in a number of ways as it applies to a creative image. It might be defined by a specific genre or simply be recognizable as the characteristics of how a specific artist applies light to a subject. It can impact an image in a positive manner when the subject matter and the style are appropriate for each other, or it can have a negative effect when they are at odds.

Composition is important to the design of an image, bringing all of the visual elements together in concert to express the purpose of the image. Proper composition holds the viewer in the image and prompts the viewer to look where the creator intends. Effective composition can be pleasing or disturbing, depending on the intent of the image maker.

Presentation affects an image by giving it a finished look. The mats and borders used, either physical or digital, should support and enhance the image, not distract from it.

Color Balance supplies harmony to an image. An image in which the tones work together, effectively supporting the image, can enhance its emotional appeal. Color balance is not always harmonious and can be used to evoke diverse feelings for effect.

Center of Interest is the point or points on the image where the maker wants the viewer to stop as they view the image. There can be primary and secondary centers of interest. Occasionally there will be no specific center of interest, when the entire scene collectively serves as the center of interest.

Lighting—the use and control of light—refers to how dimension, shape and roundness are defined in an image.
Whether the light applied to an image is man made or natural, proper use of it should enhance an image.

Subject Matter should always be appropriate to the story being told in an image.

Technique is the approach used to create the image. Printing, lighting, posing, capture, presentation media, and more are part of the technique applied to an image.

Story Telling refers to the image’s ability to evoke imagination. One beautiful thing about art is that each viewer might collect his own message or read her own story in an image.

Welcome, and yes, there is a wealth of knowledge and experience here. Some are true artists, some are not, some are professional photographers, some are beginners, and most of us are somewhere in between. Often when someone posts a photo in the gallery, there will be comments intending to help one improve his or her photography, which is instructional and is rarely just pure criticism. In the end, not everyone here strives to perfection in order to please others. Rather, a lot of us simply like to take pictures to please ourselves, and sometimes to share a nice photos for others' enjoyment, and there are some amazing photos posted here. The main thing is to just have fun with photography. And you will find that over time, as you take more and more pictures and educate yourself, you'll find that you will get better and better.

Welcome! I heartily recommend you find someone with LightRoom who will let you try it. It's easier to learn than PhotoShop and can do a lot for an image without too steep a learning curve.

Welcome to the Forum. Enjoy the ride.
I'm a minority of one, but I don't think your title, "Breaking my cherry" is appropriate and may offend others. It's a pejorative and chauvanistic term of many years past.
Sorry, but that is how it struck me.
