Just got back from a 3 day trip to Saint Simon's Island, Jekyl Island and Savannah with my wife. I so excited for the opportunities to take such wonderful photos. Everything was planned carefully, so I thought for my equipment. I even took my 35mm Nikon with a 50 mm lens loaded with 100 Ektar. Had extra, spare SD cards, batteries, battery charger, filters, etc. etc.

First thing that happened was that the cover to the battery compartment on the SLR broke. I had to use electrical tape to try and keep it closed. In the humid weather, the tape would not really cling to the camera and keep the compartment closed.

Of course I knew it would be hot and humid but didn't realize how long it would take for my lenses to acclimate and stop fogging up when I took them out of the camera bag. The larger the lens, wide angles, the more glass to fog up.

And it poured on two of the days; not just rain, but rain so hard we couldn't even run from our motel room to the car. So, trying to take the camera out in the wet weather wasn't possible.

Now, if I would have have taken my little Panasonic Lumix that I usually always carry with me, I might have had the opportunity for more photos. Oh, and last week I dropped and broke the screen on my Samsung Edge smartphone, so all I had was my old Blackberry!

I did manage to get some terrific photos during the trip, but next time I will be really prepared.
Food and beverages were good and we had a safe trip.

Why did you not go into a camera store in Savanna and rent a camera?

When in hot climates, set the AC at night to the highest temperature you can sleep at and take your equipment out of the camera bag and allow it to cool in open air; Before you leave your room in the morning, put your lens in a zip-lock bag, put your camera in a zip-lock bag, and put the memory card in a zip-lock bag. Allow the equipment to come to ambient temperature over the course of a couple hours while keeping them sealed in the zip-lock bags.

Cool down open air, warm up sealed in bags.

Rain is just another reason to carry zip-lock bags in the your camera bag.

Rather than run to the car in the rain, hold hands and go for a walk in the rain and forget the bumberchute!

Good advice. For the future!
Didn't stay in Savannah, so did not know about a camera shop. We stayed down at the islands. But the zip bags will be a part of my stuff.

Thanks

Ah yes! The challenges while on the road! Luv it! We all learned, often the hard way. Glad you had a safe trip! Luv that area of the country.

P.S. with the battery compartment door break in you SLR, might that be enough incentive for you to make a move to a DSLR??

Oh, I have a Nikon D5300 that I brought along with my Sony a6000. I had three cameras and who knows how many lenses.
I will be busy this weekend uploading the photos to my computer.
Loved the area as well. Thanks

I have learned that experience has to clean up yesterday's mess while studying prepares for tomorrow.

Welcome to Georgia. If you shoot film, consider a Nikonos next time.

That happens. On one of my numerous trips to The Grand Canyon, all camera equipment in tow, I didn't take one photograph during the entire visit. The clear skies and bright sun just didn't present a suitable scene for what I wanted. That happens.

Oh, one of the things I always take with me is garbage bags. When unused, they fold very flat and don't take up a lot of room. If it rains, they are large enough to put over my camera bag and keep it dry. Additionally, I always wear my water proof skin under my clothing. Rain becomes a non-issue, though taking photographs may have to wait.
