my arthritis has rendered my trigger finger numb. so I came up with a poor mans solution. I can now trip the shutter with my left thumb.
It is hard to tell from your image, what exactly did you rig up and how does it work from the left side? I'm curious because I too have an arthritic right hand, gouty arthritis and it is getting hard and harder to use my right index finger on the top shutter release. Components might be different as I have Pentax cameras.

Good thinking in any case.
between the grip with the flash clip and the camera is the release. the cable wraps around the bracket at the bottom and connects to the camera on the front side. grasping the grip with the left hand puts my left thumb over the button.

You might have the Raw button near the left side of the lens mount on your pentax (k5 has it), it can be set to digital preview (only jpeg though) if you choose you can save that shot. It's useful at times. Or you might use Yongnou triggers Rf603 they can run a cable to your shutter port and can be operated locally or remotely. There is always the cable release anyway.
