Civita di Bagnoreggio is a small village situated on a steep plateau of soft volcanic tufa rock in the Provence of Viterbo, Italy about an hours drive North of Rome and not far off the main highway from Rome to Florence.
The village dates back 2,500 year to the time of the Etruscans. The plateau rises up out of a deep crater-like canyon carved out by the Tiber River. The town started to go into decline several hundred years ago as the sides of the plateau eroded and buildings slid into the valley below. Decline accelerated after the bridge to the town was bombed by the Germans in WW2. It became known as 'The Dying Town'. The permanent population falls as low as 12 during the winter, but it is now visited by so many tourists that is considered to be an endangered site. Fortunately, when we visited in April it was amazingly peaceful and quiet.
I know the pictures are nothing special, but I hope they convey something of the atmosphere of this unique place.
Thanks for looking. Feedback always appreciated.

Thanks for looking Leiceflex and for the encouragement.
Very well done. You certainly captured the feel of the city and how isolated it is.

The little, old hill towns of Italy and France are amazing and beautiful and you have done an outstanding job of showing this with your photos, thanks.
