Your congressman can get you a copy or you can probably go through the VA.

Is it yours you want or someone else's? The information you'll need to provide at vary. The agency you need to conduct depends on years and branch as many records were destroyed in a fire some years ago. The link provided above by delraypiper will help.

Before I think 1950, don't believe there are DD-214 you have to use other methods of proof.
The websites provided in this thread should get you to a DD-214

Find and contact or drop by your nearest Veterans Service Organization (VSO) office. Google to find the closest.
Example for Pennsylvania: http://www.dmva.pa.gov/veteransaffairs/Pages/Outreach-and-Reintegration/County-Directors.aspx
Phone them for info. In my case, I had a DD214 copy but needed an original. My local VSO submitted the required forms for me and in a few weeks, I had two certified (e.g. originals) mailed to me from Washington.
Your local VSO is like one-stop shopping for veterans benefits. In one visit, they submitted the paperwork for my DD214, signed me up for veterans medical benefits, made an appointment for my first clinic visit and gave me a wallet-sized card that gives me discounts at many stores and restaurants. They also have info on many other VA benefits including for Vietnam vets. I was impressed. Your results may vary.

First step: contact your branch of service to get phone numbers of their Personnel department. Online approach might make this easy. Know your dates of service, service number, place of induction and discharge. Don't forget your middle name. These offices get lots of bogus stuff, so their detail is really to protect you. If you have a local VA office they might have good advice. If you have a local recruiter office for your branch, stop in, they may have advice.

go to your nearest VSO with identfication and let him do the paperwork to get it. That is what they do, among other things.

Apply at the nearest VA office, or contact DOD direct. Then wait....possibly forever. I applied, and they told me it would take a year. That was two and a half years ago.

I still remember my Air Force service number even though I was discharged in 1968 (AF1976****), the family phone number from when I was a kid (IVanhoe9-****), my California driver's license number as issued in 1958 (H49****) and my DOB even though it was over 70 years ago (March 7, 19**). Since 1958 California issued so many new driver's licenses that they had to add another digit (H049****).
