If a guy had finally convinced himself to move up to a dlsr that is very video capable (80D or 6D II, still deciding on that one), would the EF 24-105, 3.5-5.6, IS, STM or the EF 24-105, 4/L IS, USM lens be the better overall choice? I believe that the STM lens is more geared more towards shooting video and that the stepper motor reduces focusing noises recorded when tracking a subject in video, but is that the primary difference and would the STM lens also be a good choice for stills? With the vastly improved Dual pixal focusing now offered, would there be any real difference in speed or accuracy in focusing between the STM and the USM lens? I realize that the L series lens would be better sealed, etc, but would they be comparable in overall performace?

Yes, the STM would be a good choice for stills too. It's considered a very sharp lens just lacking a professional build for everyday & heavy use. If you don't abuse your gear or are not working in all kinds of weather, Canon has many equally fine lenses to their L line at comparably lower prices.

So far in my own experience, my USM lenses do focus with less noise, than my STM lenses! All I can say about the lenses is, that the 24-105/f4L is a way better lens!
Since I own and use both the EF 24-105, 3.5-5.6, IS, STM and the EF 24-105, 4/L IS, here is my opinion. The f/4L has a much better build quality, the color rendition and contrast is better, and the f/4L is sharper.
I have only used the STM version on a Canon 7D MK II, Canon 1Dx and Canon 5D MK IV. I use the STM on my 5D MK IV when I am doing strictly video since the AF in a little quieter. The STM's AF is pretty quick and silent.

I like the USM better for one reason only. The manual focus over ride is available with the power off. The STM works great but it could be me that I find not having focus with power off disconcerting. I have the 10-18 STM and love the lens and quality of the photos just need to remember the focus is different compared to all my other lenses which are USM.
