Hello everyone. I've been taking 35mm film pictures since the 70's and switched to digital about 3 years back, but I'm still having trouble getting comfortable with any editing software so far. I've been thinking about using PhotoShop, but unsure if that's the friendliest way to go. Shoot with a Nikon D7000, which I like very much for stills, but not so much for moving video. Any advise on where to start will be appreciated.
Regards,

Try lightroom 6; about $145 from B & H. No subscription and should do everything you want for several years until you learn the program and how to edit. Then, you may want to move to photoshop; maybe not.

Reading your question you want something real simple. You did not say which computer you use: Windows or Mac. I'll guess you have Windows. If I'm right start with Fotor, a simple app that gives good results. When you want to do more try Photoscape, or Paint.Net. If you want a more capable photo editor try Gimp. All the above photo editors are free. There are many others which are good, I'm sure others will recommend them. Watchout for Photoscape X which a pay for version. If you are happy to pay try Affinity Photo.

A new product on the market is Affinity Photo. One time payment of $50.00, lots of video tutorials and as capable as Photoshop.

You can use a fully functional Photo Shop demo for two weeks for free. Try it out.

What on earth makes you think it's as capable as photoshop?

I have been using Photoshop since CS2 and I prefer Affinity Photo. For my sketching and art work I use Affinity Design and SketchBook Pro.

Nikon Capture NX-2 has been an outstanding editor. Unfortunately, they stopped updating it a couple of years ago but it supports RAW files from the D7000. I still use it when I work on RAW files from my D7000. When I got my D500, I had to download Capture NX-D (not nearly as good as NX-2). Capture NX-2 can be downloaded from Nikon's website. Capture NX-D is a free download from Nikon's website.

If you're not sure about Photoshop, you could get Photoshop Elements. It has probably 80% to 90% of what Photoshop CC has. I use it when I do something that requires using layers.

Because for Photo editing it is. However - if I've got it wrong I'd love to know why?

Photoshop Express has all the basic tools, is easy to learn, and was about $65 last time I looked. I generally use it to crop photos, change image size, and to control/adjust contrast and light. It has batch tools - so after I have worked with 50 images from a walk I can create a subfolder named "Web" within that folder, and then make compressed copies of all the photos in that folder for emailing, submission here, etc..

As someone else posted, go with Corel PaintShop Pro. Easy to use and not expensive.
