I don't own a DSLR, just my point & shoot and my iphone4. I been trying to save money to get a Canon EOS Rebel T3. I've been looking at amazon and found found one with a EF-S 18-55mm IS II Lens, I'm really big on not having to use the flash when shooting in low light so i was looking at the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens. I really like the 50mm lens because of the f/1.8. My question is, does the 50mm lens have the same zooms as the 18-55mm lens? Can i zoom out less than 50mm on the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens? Please give me your thoughts! I really what a camera!!!! Attached are some pictures that i've taken with my iphone mean while:)

Loyda,

Welcome to the group from another newbie. The 50mm has no zoom, that is why there is no other number, it is 50 mm only.

You have taken some nice shots with your iphone. Don't abandon your P&S just yet, it is nice to grab your camera and not your camera bag. If you can get satisfactory results with a phone and a P&S just keep clicking with those.

Post more shots soon, these first three look good to me.

Eric

I cant believe those pictures are from an I phone  The expression on the pooches face is priceless. You should post that in the critters topic in the pictures section. now to answer your question even though I am a Nikonian and not a Cannonnite. Unless a lens gives a range like 18-200 or or 24-80 etc it is not a zoom lens and you can not zoom in and out with it. A 50 mm lens is what is called a normal lens because its angle of view is the same as a human eye. Dont despair in the old days slr's were sold with 50 mm lenses and great shots were made using a photography acsessory called feet :!: you walked closer or farther away depending on what you wanted in your compisition. If you want to take shots in low light without using flash (WHY?) you need a camera that has the highest iso possible, Nikons have a great reputation for allowing high iso without creating much noise (grain). If you havent invested in cannon You should really test nikon. Find yourself a real camera store anf try them out. The minimum wage drone workers at wally world, sams target etc aren't trained and know bupkiss. At a real camera store the guy'gal beehind the counter is an actual photographer. :XD: Oh and eric 2nd poster the avatar photo of the cat is breathtaking. You should get it printed at 8x10 or larger and hang it on your wall. I assume that's your kitty?

You might look at the new EVIL cameras (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens). Panasonic and Olympus have the Micro 4/3rds lines (G & GF series for Panny and the Pen series for Oly), Sony with the NEX line, Samsung has the NX line but Canon and Nikon don't have an offering YET. It is a cross between a P&S and an interchangeable lens camera. Look at DPReview, PCMag.com, PhotoRadar, Digital-photography-school.com and Photographyblog.com for some reviews. That should keep you busy for a while.

Have fun and report back with what you learn,

Eric
