As I understand it, updates are free but new versions will be charged for. Version 1 is now at 1.5, when it gets to v2, it will cost money. When it reaches v2, hopefully it will be more robust with fewer bugs, the current price is to get new customers on board, v2 price may start reflecting the real cost. Hopefully, users of v1 will be able to upgrade at a better price than those buying the finished Affinity Photo.

Yes, this is the exact same business model that most software companies use.

Serif (a small company out of England) is a great company.

Like one of the other posters already said they have been around a long time (they were founded in 1987 -- that's 30 years ago) and make excellent products. I use two of their products which are excellent and highly recommend: WebPlus (software for creating web sites) and PagePlus (a Desktop Publishing program).

They make their money the way almost all Software companies make their money. You buy their software and they make upgrades available. I think a bit of the confusion is that the software is new -- so I don't think they have offered an upgrade yet for Affinity.

I also wanted to add that as a much smaller company than Adobe -- that their overhead costs are much lower, i.e. they have to make much, much less money to remain viable.

Don't worry, if history is any indication (30 years of viability) Serif will still be around for a very long time.

Also, someone commented that Adobe has more training materials available. Yes, there is much more training material for Adobe, but from my experience with Serif their training materials are top notch.

I use Corel PaintShop Pro as my photo processing software (mainly because I find the software fantastic and I've been using it for many years and know it extremely well). But I strongly recommend Serif Affinity as well. Serif is just a top notch company.

Affinity Photo is created and sold by Serif Software. Serif Software has been around for over 15 (maybe 20) years, so they know what they are doing.

All the PhotoPlus versions (the precursor to Affinity), gave free updates within a version and charged for version updates. And they were always reasonably priced.

For those who are choosing Affinity Software, the company (Serif) is a good company, and their products, in my experience, are also good.

Serif was founded in 1987 (30 years)!!

I researched Affinity a couple of months ago when it was highly recommended as a substitute for photoshop and found that it is much more a substitute for photoshop elements; not photoshop. It lacks a whole lot of what photoshop has to offer.

Yes, its a shame. :-( Still I'll probably be able to use the version of WebPlus I have for another 5 years at least, as long as it keeps running. It has all the features I want. Will definitely get my money's worth out of it. I think I paid $30 for a copy. I guess in 5+ years I'll have to go find something else.

PagePlus is also getting discontinued. Probably use my current copy of PagePlus for at least another 3 years, and then upgrade to Affinity Publisher, which is slated to be released next year. I think I paid $40 for my copy of PagePlus, so again an amazing value.

That's what I love about non-subscription software -- you can upgrade whenever you want.

Serif is a great company.
