On my last day in Wellington (my husband is still working there), we drove up to a small town, Waikanae, on the west coast, had a nice lunch and then strolled along the beach. The ocean was amazingly calm, and the sun was out to complete the experience. What was notable was the wave height at about 6-12 inches! This was definitely not a surfing beach. I suspect that changes as wind increases, but this day was calm in every respect. The beach, part of a marine reserve, was too long to explore fully in the short time we allowed, but was particularly pretty around an estuary at the north end of our destination. Enjoying the sunshine, we had momentarily forgotten it is winter there until we had a visual reminder from the snow capped mountains east of us. Off the coast to the west was Kapiti Island. A short ferry ride away, it would have been fun to visit, but the timing didn't work. Next time.

Glad you enjoyed our winter day. Waikanae is a nice spot, if you'd come over the snow tipped mountains I could have shown you around. Nice shots Vickarts.
