Aperture and Canon gone their separate ways

When Apple announced they were no longer going to support Aperture I knew at some point I would encounter problems. I have used and liked Aperture but realized another program was in my future at some point. Today that point arrived. I downloaded the first photos shot on a new 5D MkIV and when I went to look at the RAW as long as I stayed in the browser mode the images were the usual thumb-nail sized. When I tried to open in the viewer mode the image went to a black warning triangle and the caption read "Unsupported Image Format." Bye-bye Aperture.

Take a look at Affinity - a $50 Photoshop.

Or On1 RAW, that has an indexer with it as well as really good photo manipulation tools.

I use Luminar with my Canon EOS 80D and I am very pleased with it. One time buy, no monthly fee, plenty of tutorials. Try the trial version.

I don't want to educate anyone here, but the reason your new camera's raw files garnered that message has nothing to do with Aperture but instead with the fact that you need to update your MacOS software. In Mac, the demosaicing programs for raw files are included in the operating system (not so in Windows), so if you update your OS Aperture should be happy.

For now, at least - I dropped Aperture last year for Lightroom after Apple made their announcement because I knew at some point Aperture would eventually be incompatible with a later version of the OS. So switch if you like, but meanwhile you can find the update to your OS and Aperture should work.

You need not worry about educating us, your information is incorrect. I just tried to load the files on to my laptop that is up to date with the latest MAC IOS and got the same results, Apple has cut Aperture loose. Unsupported Image Format is the new Aperture, regardless of the operating system.

Update your Camera RAW converter before ditching Aperture.
I had to update mine when moving to 5D mk III.
Aperture 3.6 works with the latest OS versions.

Fine - don't listen to me (or BigBear) - with the Mac it's the OS itself that handles the raw file interpretation (and Aperture was ONLY made for the MacOS, so other operating systems are moot in this discussion). Like I said, I switched last year realizing that in due time Aperture would no longer work with some upgraded version of MacOS, though by all accounts that has not happened yet. Meanwhile, you don't mention what MacOS you are running, and perhaps if it is an old version there is no upgrade available for that model camera - you might want to take a gander at their list: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT207049

Just got off the phone with Apple Pro Svc. Photos will accept CRW files only after they are processed individually into the system. Apple is not including newer cameras in RAW processing positions. They are planning future updates that will allow RAW files to be processed in Photos. At this time RAW files from newer cameras are not comparable with Apple photo software in RAW mode.

Download a copy of Affinity Photo instead of paying a monthly fee to the Evil Empire. I use it on Windows, but it was first written for the Mac.

I had a similar problem with Windows 10 Photos. The Faststone Raw Codecs solved the problem (I think someone on here suggested it). I don't know if there is a version for MAC or not.
