Smartphone photography made better

In order to assist friends (and foes) to take better photos with their smartphones I occasionally let them know the following:

1. In the camera settings activate the grid for improved horizontal/vertical alignment.
2. Always shoot in the highest resolution available.
3. Avoid using the flash if possible.
4. On the screen - pinch in or out to adjust zoom.
5. On the screen - Tap at various places to adjust the light in the picture.
6. Press and hold the shutter button to shoot bursts. (This might be adjusted in Settings first)
7. Download Lightroom and Photoshop for post processing. Both are free of charge.
8. Shoot an example/nonsense picture. In Lightroom - Post process the picture using the simple sliders. It rarely takes longer time than 30 seconds to show them what they can do to it.

The result is always the same. Happier faces.

Added Tip: The earphones can be used as a shutter release. at least they can on my IPhone 6. Just use the volume controls + - and it will activate the
shutter. Great for taking street photography shots when you don't want people to know you are taking their picture. Also works great we you have your phone mounted on a tripod. Use just like a normal cable release.

Good set of tips except for nr. 4, I only use the pinch to zoom when viewing never when taking a photograph.

Totally agree with this. It's a digital zoom. I think it's better to take care of that in post. One could always resize the image in post using a program like Fractuals Now On1 Photo resize etc.

The mobile version is free in both cases, they are cut down versions of the original but are very good for phone and tablet use.

If I'm not mistaken, Lightroom Mobile will also let you send the image you are working on your Phone/IPAd, back to the Lightroom on your Desktop.

Also, check out Photoshop Mix, and Photoshop fix as apps on your phone. You can composite with Mix.
