Really? Write down at least one hundred thousand names of people who agree with you and post those names here and then get 250 to reply on here specifically stating the nonsense you state as fact.

Says you.

Mechanically, Nikon and Pentax followed the same path, largely maintaining compatibility while slowly modifying their basic lens design. After twenty-some years they are ending up essentially at the same place Canon jumped to with their EF lenses. Good people can argue about which path is better, but I believe it is clear that Canon gained ground, and Pentax lost ground, during that time.

Your post implies that the change in market position is a direct result of the lens mount. Canon increased its market share by building a larger customer base than Nikon. They did it with new users that they brought into the arena by aggressive marketing Not by converting large numbers away from Nikon.

I believe their success was partly attributable to a very likeable lens system.

you will get no argument there since you used 'partly'.
Canon was very smart and forward looking during that period while Nikon was smug and did very little to build their customer base.. That attitude bit them where they sit.
What the actual numbers were I don't know but it seems then that Canon was every where you looked, TV, radio, magazines. Nikon? They were hiding their light under a bushel in comparison.
