Good morning everyone. I have a Nikon D5500 and am starting to get brave and shoot in manual mode. Results are ok but my question is, do you all set the ISO yourself or use Auto ISO in manual mode? What are the pros and cons of Auto ISO? Thank you in advance.

I can't speak for others, but when I shoot in manual mode, I set ISO manually, too. I want to use the entire photographic triangle, and Auto ISO throws that off.

Before talking about Auto ISO, we need to know why you are shooting in manual; what are you hoping to gain from this??

There is no auto ISO in manual mode.

I have never ever used ISO in the Auto mode. I keep it set to 200 ISO unless I am going to be taking photos anywhere darker than shade. Then, depending on what I want the photo to look like I might raise it to 800. I know it will go above 800 but seldom see the need. If there is a need I will raise it. I want to have control over my shots so adjust the aperture/shutter speed to priority as needed.

I will use Auto ISO when there are changing lighting conditions. For example under partly cloudy skies when the the sun is popping in and out behind clouds.

Exactly.

Whenever the camera decides the aperture, shutter speed or ISO you are not actually in manual mode and at the mercy of the camera's relatively dumb meter.

When you are truly in manual mode you are using your camera's meter (or an external meter) to suggest an exposure for the ISO you have selected. You need to understand why you might override that suggestion. It takes a little more thought but it will make you a better photographer.

Just checked the Nikon site to be sure (as I never use auto ISO), but essentially with auto ISO turned on you choose aperture and shutterspeed but the exposure is still set by the camera by adjusting the ISO to make your other settings "correct". So with auto ISO you are not manually controlling exposure.

My personal preference is to set the ISO and never let the camera set it for me.

I HATE auto ISO except when I need it, because the camera chooses what it wants. If I set the high end too low then I can't get the right exposure, but when you need a photo you just have to let the camera do its work!

Yes there is. From page 99 in the D5500 reference manual.

We?? Speak for yourself ... I certainly don’t pretend that it’s any of my business to know why!

I often use manual exposure settings, but never use auto ISO. I suppose it "could" help, in some situations, but I like to have control over the ISO as well in manual. Nikon separates exposure from camera sensitivity, and aperture/shutter speed are exposure, ISO is camera sensitivity.
