Not so much of a joke, though.

So true. I remember being at a Thanksgiving meal a few years ago.
Everyone under about 40 spent the evening looking at their phone
and not interacting with anyone who was actually in the room.

Are you sure about that? It's not unusual for people sitting near each other to text, rather than talk to each other.

jerryc41-
That is entirely possible.
Perhaps people will evolve...losing their vocal chords, but developing very strong thumbs.

I have two grandchildren that live on their phones. If we didn't have a no phones at the table rule we would never get to talk with them. That is if you call their one word responses talking.

Not so long ago we invited someone over and his first question was not 'what time' but 'did we have a wi-fi network.' Understandably we did not put much effort into the grub.

My wife and I were out for dinner recently at a noisy restaurant. At one point, I pulled out my cell phone and fiddled with it for a minute or two before putting it away. My wife said, "that's not like you to use your cell phone during dinner, that's rude, why'd you do that?" I told her that the restaurant was too noisy, and I had to lower the volume of my (bluetooth-controlled) hearing aids. And it was true.

My Bowflex Max Trainer, Blaze Fitbit watch, Sensi heating/cooling thermostat, and my Braun Oral-B toothbrush are all controlled through my iphone. I've actually forgotten how to set the alarm on the alarm clock on the nightstand. (I use the alarm on the iphone)

If my iphone ever dies, I'll probably have to call 911.
