So, I just bought a new Nikon D5600 to replace the D5500 that got demolished when my motorcycle fell on it in an extreme wind storm. Found out that my Ml-L3 remote will not work with it. So, besides snapbridge ( I don't generally bring my phone while hiking) what is the best way to remotely trigger the shutter?

It should work.

Ml-L3 isn't listed as being supported on the 5600.

Looking at the downloadable manual doesn't mention it either, also looking at the features images with corresponding description list the camera only has one "eye sensor" and it's located on the front of the camera, some models have two, front and rear. You could try it from the front with direct line of sight but, I don't think that will help. Nikon lists the much more expensive WR-T10 @ $95 versus the ML-L3 at $20.

Surprising! It looks like a wired remote is the only alternative.

Call Nikon and ask. For the wireless remotes to work, you have to turn them on in the camera menu and for most cameras it buried deep in the menu; so far deep, the reps have trouble directing you to it. They buried it, let them take the time to figure it out for you.

They went to the D5300 and went from one sensor on the back to one on the front and one on the back. The 5500 and 5600 are upgrades so hard to imagine they would take a step backward on remote trigger.

WR-R10 is the remote unit

This is one of the reasons why I bought a 5500. The ML-3 does not work with the 5600. Instead, Nikon expects you to use an app on your phone to act as a remote using their Bluetooth technology. Makes you wonder why you even brought the camera along, when you could just take the picture on your phone.

Exactly. If I had known this beforehand, I would have bought another 5500. Guess I should have done a little more investigating before putting my money down.

I just bought the Pixel that comes up on the same page https://smile.amazon.com/Pixel-TW-283-DC2-Wireless-Shutter/dp/B016W3KCW4/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1499707574&sr=8-8&keywords=pixel+remote

I've only had it a week, but it works well. They send you the cable specific to your camera brand and model. Mine is for Sony a6xxx.

These have some advantages over the IR remotes which are line of sight. They are radio based and will work through a certain amount of walls. The downside is you have to attach the receiver to the camera and plug it into the camera jack. The IR remote is ready at all times.

GIVE VELLO FREEWAVE A CALL. Works on D750 guessing it will work on yours. Your camera has to be set correctly and not on remote to work.

Nikon seems to be stepping backwards on all their "upgrades". Took the sensor cleaner out of the D3400. Took the second card slot out of the D7500. Took GPS out after D5300.

Interesting marketing approach: offer less and charge more.

(I get pissed about the lack of an infrared release and impossible to screw in wired release on my D800 every time I want to use it!)

The D5300 has both wifi and infrared release. The wifi works but requires much more fussing than the infrared. And, as noted, you need your phone.

No issue on the D5300. It has a button for release mode.
