Mustang (equine) Portrait

Looking for comments and suggestions.

This is a group of Mustangs and their trainer (yes, I have permission to publish this image). All four Mustangs were born in the wild and captured by the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) in order to control the herd populations. The freeze-mark on the neck of the horse to the right, identifies the age, where it was "gathered", and a registration number.

So, whaddya think? How could we improve this photo? Or, what should we consider for the next photo session? Thanks!

I think it's pretty neat the way it is.

I really like it as is, Gitchigumi. Would've liked to download it, though. Amazing how gentle horses are!

A really lovely pic, certainly deserves to be a Download. Having a "crop" thing, I could suggest bringing the top down to the upper ears, the bottom up to the lowest nose, and on the sides, close in to the shoulders. But the attraction is different to different viewers. Another option might be to shoot all five on the same level, heads only, but that's a "might". Just to get all four to pose is an achievment, can be difficult enough with one! Does the Bureau retain ultimate ownership? Reminds me of the end of "Hidalgo" where the winning mustang went back to the natural herd.

Thank you for your suggestion on cropping. I will look at that opportunity.

The Bureau has an adoption program as part of their efforts to manage the herds of wild horses and burros in some of the Western states. The horses are legally and fully owned by their owners, who must meet strict requirements to qualify for purchasing one.

There are competitions where qualified trainers each select a horse from those gathered. They are then given 100 days to prepare the horse for a competition. The trainers take the wild horses, train them, then, after 100 days, return to perform in a judged competition event. The trainers can win cash prizes, but horses are still owned by the BLM and are auctioned-off immediately after the winners are announced. The trainer, along with any other qualified bidder, can bid on the horse for purchase and ownership.
