Thanks! That really cleared up my question.

Another possibility:
Before going to Glacier National Park last month, I bought a WD 'My Passport Wireless Pro', (M.P.W.P.). I can upload my SD cards wirelessly, or simply insert the SD card from the camera into the WD M.P.W.L., and download. One TB - $150.
Left one 32 gb SD card in slot one on my D7200, and downloaded slot two nightly and reformatted it.
Works great!

Who answered it?
The control panel window (lower right hand corner) tell you how many exposures are remaining, shots after that will be written to the overflow card or overwritten if the overflow and primary card are full.
Since no one appears to be able to answer your question, I suggest experimentation. Format both cards, set the camera to use the second card only for overflow and start taking the largest file size images you can. Keep doing it until the first card fills up and then keep going until the second card fills up. Then see what the result is. I suspect when the second card fills, the camera will give you a "Err" indication or just stop letting you click the shutter. If you do this experiment, please post the results so we will know the answer.

I will try to let you know in a couple of weeks when I return.
I just returned from vacation and did fill the overflow. Had two 8 gig cards. The camera would not let me shoot and alerted me by flashing in the view screen, Slot 2 is full or something close to that. Make sure you turn your camera off before pulling the cards. Hope this helps, camera was a D750.

I will also be backing them up on my laptop and an external drive daily, just wanted an additional alternative. We can never be too cautious.
Perhaps a USB thumb drive, then. Make sure the camera sets the dates on the files correctly, then just backup the most recent to the thumb drive.
