Nope. You have lots of reach already, and you will just make the lens slower.

Have a D810 and 200-500. Bought a 1.4 teleconverter.
Good in static situations where there is really good light...almost worthless in less than ideal conditions and not good for actions shots. So its rarely used.

I just bought a 200-500 for my D-500 and took it to Kodiak to photograph eagles. It was fine for the still shots, but way to slow and heavy for use in flight. I found myself useing the 18-200 the most.

I dident think it would weigh any more than the Sigma which goes to 600 mm on long end , and a lot are hand holding that , I believe it is the sport model

It depends what you are used to. I have used an AFs 500 F/4 for years. By comparison the 200-500 is a light weight and easy to hand hold. It seldom sees a tripod.

No. You'll be happier to crop when needed.

You don't want to damage the image quality of that great lens and have plenty of MP to work with for cropping.

Hit or miss for Eagles; if you find yourself shooting at 500 a lot then it might help. But if you frequently go below 500, then it's definitely not worth it.

I use a 1.4 on the 200-500 when shooting snowboard competitions. But I'm not looking for the kind of sharpness you want with BIF, and I want the reach just to see what I'm shooting.

No. I have shot with a 600mm F4 but wanted something I could hand-hold and still have decent image quality. I looked at all the usual suspects, and though I am a Nikon guy, ended up getting the Sigma Sport to use with my D800s. It's fine, results are similar to the 600 F4, and I have yet to use it on a tripod over the past 10 months. Other than in marginal light or if I need more than 600mm and need to attach a 1.4 TC, I don't use the 600mmF4 much anymore. The 600 focuses faster, but the Sigma is no slouch. When I borrowed the 200-500, which I liked a lot, I found it not to be as sharp and contrasty as the Sigma.

Hand held, Nikon D810, with 200-500. Didn't have a problem

I shoot wild life to. I use an 18-300 and have no problem, I have even sold some of my shots, My point is a tele converter will make the need for bright light a necessity. The lens that you are contemplating is fine just the way it is. you ill have more than ample reach and be able to shoot in less than ideal light

Good shoting

When taking advice from those responding to your query, make sure that they actually speak from experience of using both the Nikkor 200 - 500mm f5.6 + the Nikkor TC14E. If they have not used this particular combination then their advice is irrelevant. I have both and have used them together. If you need a particular shot which is out of range of your 200 - 500mm and you have with you a tripod and the light is reasonable or better, then this combination works quite well. There are a number of examples on this forum and elsewhere. I was happy with the results I achieved, even though I had a very strong wind blowing in my face causing my eyes to water. If you can justify the expense of a TC14E then buy one: you have nothing to lose and it will enable you to take a shot you would not normally be able to take. I use mine on a Nikon D500. My copy of the 300 - 500mm is brilliant and I have given up using my much lighter Nikkor 300mm f4 PF VR + TC 14E.
