D7000 Depth of Field Preview Button
I recently received my D7000 and was watching a video on YouTube titled "Little Known features of the D7000." This video showed how the D7000 has a Depth of Field (DOF) preview button and when you pushed it you would get a preview of your DOF before taking a picture. I tried this and nothing happened. My manual does not say much about this and I can't find anything else on the Internet about exactly how this is supposed to work. Does anyone have experience in using this little known feature on the D7000?
By default, the lens aperture is wide open. If you set the aperture to something else and hit the DOF preview button, the scene in the viewfinder will get darker and (after your eyes adjust a bit) you will see the DOF.
Snowbear. Thank you. The video I watched on YouTube. When the photographer pushed the DOF button I heard a slight noise as if the mirror was being locked up. I don't know if that was the actual noise I heard, but I definitely heard something. When I push my button I hear nothing. Am I doing something wrong?
My D90 also has a DOF button. According to the manual, it only works in M,A,S,and P Modes. You have to go into the menu on the back of the camera, go to Custon Settings and then down to Bracket/Flash and turn Modeling Flash ON. Using the Viewfinder, press shutter button then press DOF button. It's supposed to give you the setting to use. Mine change the f number.
cspear42: The sound you hear is probably the aperture leaves moving. Normally it happens at the same time the shutter opens (and closes).
Gidgette: You talk about DOP - is that something different? It sounds like you are programming another button to do this. I'm not familiar with the D90. If it is a "standard" DOF preview button, you only need to change the aperture with the aperture ring (older AI lenses) or the command dial.
I just figured it out. This PREVIEW button has to be assigned under f4 of the Customs Setting Menu. When I checked this menu it was on "Grid" and once I changed it to "Preview" it worked like a charm. Now, when I press this button before shooting it actually shows me what the picture will look like before shooting. What a great feature. Thank you for all your help. If you have one of these buttons you should make certain it has been assigned correctly so you can benefit from this little know gadget. Thanks again.

OOPS!!! Meant DOF(went and changed the P to F) The manual said to change the Bracket/Flash to ON. Before I did that, the DOF button didn't do anything, after I changed the B/F to on, DOF showed a different f stop. I adjusted the f number to the new one and took picture. Guess that was what I was supposed to do. Charlie, thanks for straightening me out. Like I said, only works in M,A,S and P mode.
Correct - it would not work in Auto since you can't change the aperture (or anything else, really) in Auto. Again, I can't speak to Bracket/Flash since I've never used that model camera.
Hmmm..thanks for this thread. I have been trying to get the DoF preview button to work on my EOS20D without success. Now I have some more things to try!
Thank you UHH!!

Isn't "e3: Modeling Flash" for use with built-in and optional flash units only? The original question didn't mention flash.
the problem is people buy cameras but do not take trouble to read, understand the camera,it is a tool, and dof is not a new technology,in film cameras also we had a dof button.
Oh, so now we are supposed to read the instructions? Please don't tell my wife.
Sorted. The DoF button only works on the EOS20D in manual mode and if the appature is of the correct size

Does the D5100 have a DOF button option? Didn't seem to show in options anywhere.

I have not had success finding one in the D5100 manual either. That doesn't mean it isn't there. I have several times found that I just am not using the Nikon terminology when looking for such things. Lot's of things can lurk in a 239 page manual.
Score another advantage for the D7000. Improves my argument for being in line for a D7100...if they add an articulated screen.
