For some unknown reason my D7000 has recorded a couple images out of 50 in JPEG while the camera was set for RAW, The images were in the middle of the 50. Any idea as to how?

Did you go into the menus at some point and alter image quality? That the only thing I can think of.

Did you spin a dial while pressing a button you set up to do so, to change quality...i.e. I have in the past set something (for example) the preview button, spin one of the dials while holding in the preview button (don't remember if that was the button or not being, I haven't used that body in over a year) and it changes image quality (wantingly at times) but at other times with out realizing it.

Not sure if this would do it, but perhaps either by choice or accident you shot in Full Auto mode?

Time for a D7200!

I've never experienced this, but it would be unusual for the camera to make the change itself for only two images. If it happens again without your input, it's time for servicing.

I think you are a victim of real GAS from Nikon. My Nikon D750 has done the same thing to me. It was only once but it was also at a time that I would have not chosen for it to do it.

If the camera has to do any kind of in-camera processing for whatever reason, the output file won't be raw, it'll be jpg, even if it's set to output raw in normal circumstances. If you inadvertently switched to one of the camera's Scene or Effects modes or in-camera HDR or some such, the output would be jpg.

In my case, no. I never use those scene modes. I caught the problem almost immediately and discovered that the camera by itself switched from RAW to jpeg. I figured the camera had mind of it's own and since I have never shot in jpeg, it thought it would show me it could go into amateur mode.

In that case what your D7000 needs is a severe talking to (if you let them away with things they get to thinking that they can take liberties ).

I think your camera has a Pixelgeist.

The only other thing I know of is in the Retouch menu. You can do RAW to .jpeg processing there.

I hear yah. I don't have a D7000, I think it's a flaw in Nikon's software(a glitch), but I hear you and am way ahead of you. I punished it severely; made it sit in the bottom of the closet for two weeks with the light out and the door shut (it can't stand the door shut). I also removed the battery from it and threatened to have it's programming fried if it ever did it again. I heard it crying and begging to be left to for the whole first week; the second week it shut up after another threat of deprogramming immediately. It was a cruel thing to do but sometimes tough love just has to be exerted. It has behaved itself ever since and seems to be much happier now too.

It's the second time it has happened. Both times I was in a wet environment and shut the camera off and returned it to my bag to keep it dry between shots. It's my knock around camera...out in the boat, hunting in the bogs of Newfoundland... I already have a 7100 and an 800. Maybe it's time to make the 7100 my knock around camera and pass this to one of my grandchildren. I feel a gas attack coming. Now what do I replace my 7100 with ? Used mostly for wildlife with an 80 - 400 Nikon. Suggestions???
