When Fixing a pic in LR4 or fine tuning it,should I put my screen at a 90 degree angle from my key board.If I move it back a little the fixed photo seems to get a little darker.I have a laptop 15 inch.What is the correct position I should put my screen? I want to send pics out to get printed To Mpix. Thanks Jim Bianco

That is why, although I carry a laptop when travelling to download my photos, I do very little editing on it. Most laptops only have a Twisted Nematic (TN) display which has a very poor viewing angle, particularly in the vertical plane. They are also rather dull compared with a decent monitor. Better (read expensive) laptops and monitors have In-plane Switching (IPS) displays which are brighter and have a better viewing angle. Unfortunately I cannot justify the cost of one.

When I do need to process a file on the laptop (I shoot only in RAW), I do the following:

* put the laptop on a table and sit on a chair so my eyes are in a fixed position wrt to the display. It is useless to have it on my lap as my eyes move wrt to the screen;
* display a photograph which I know is well processed (at least to me);
* adjust the laptop screen angle and, if necessary, brightness until that photo looks right;
* do my processing.

Even then, I usually end up re-doing the RAW image when I get home.

If you use the laptop for all processing, then I suggest you buy a decent stand-alone monitor to plug into it.

It is your eyes that should be perpendicular with the screen - the keyboard don't care what it looks like....

My advice, never use a laptop to edit your pics..I only use an IPS monitor, they have a wide angle of view and aren't effected by angle...

When I do PPing...First step is take a card or anything with square edges, align top edge of card to center of monitor and line it up with my eyes. Even do this with my Dell IPS monitor...thus eyes perpendicular to the screen.

Here is a small tool that may help you line up your monitor. It provides consistency of the viewing position.
It's the Acratech 60005S viewing angle gauge
