Thanks rockdog.
Bit early to say for sure, certainly there has been a lot of talk about it here and the move back to mono hull has a lot of support, but I think perhaps the genie is out of the bottle now.
The excitement and immediate result of sea-borne formula 1 racing, I think, probably has more general appeal and might attract more advertising dollars etc.
And at the end of the day, The Americas Cup has always been about the dollar and somewhere in the mix, a rich mans ego.

1851 a US boat won the cup in Britain, it was the schooner "America", so the cup is named after the boat. The New York Yacht Club made it a challenge trophy and for 132 years the US defending yacht won every challenge, then in 1983 an Australian boat won. Since then it has bounced back and forth. New Zealand boats have now won three times, Swiss boats twice, Australian once and US boats a total of 30 wins since 1851.

What?
Dear old New Zealand not only had a boat (and won), but, the American boat was skippered by Australia's top match racing skipper, Jimmy Spithill.
Thanks for your congrats

It is quite likely that with the current style of racing yachts ie...cat & foils , New Zealand could never find a location which could provide the necessary consistent wind range .
The NZ waters have winds which at the best of times would/could vary greatly from hour to hour , and well above that seen in the Bermuda races.
I'd predict a boat format that could cope with heavier waters , and stronger winds with wider short term fluctuations.
Anyway, whatever is decided upon, we're hoping the cup will be held here in NZ!!
Congrats to both teams on an amazing yachting spectacle!!....D.

HATE......Hate. the recent design of America's Boat Race. We learned to sail on my cousin's boat. We eventually bought a used 27' Hunter. I loved taking it out and the peace that came with it. My husband found this drink holder device that you put on the life line. It was the perfect fit for a plastic sized rocks glass. If you were tacking or healing it just sat there and always swiveled. Never lost a drop of Scotch. Wonderful invention.
Congratulations.

I agree that the cats run by hydraulics with the pedaling or pumping to maintain pressure are silly. A return to monohulls of a reasonable length is desirable, imo. Mary Kate, our first real boat was a used Hunter 25 but, like GAS for photographers, we moved to a Catalina 27 (great boat) and finally to a Tartan 34C.

Nice progression. We no longer sail. We truly enjoyed it. You are able to carry on a conversation not so on power boats.

cdayton, our boating history is somewhat similar to yours. My folks had sail when I was born and mother told me I was first aboard when I was in a bassinet--that word in itself pretty much dates me, but when my brother came along, mom decided that they should go to power as she wanted to know when they would be home. This was in the time that there were few outboards on recreational sailboats. Disregarding those early days, I learned to sail on an uncle's 30' centerboard sloop and enjoyed sailing, crewing and using my folks cruiser during my teen years and for several years post service. Our first boat was also a Catalina 27 (#6336)--one of the last--and we sailed her out of Newburyport, MA for 15 years. It was a great boat and we cruised on her from 'down east' to Shelter Island, NY then bought the Island Packet 32 which we still have on the Chesapeake Bay. The difference in room, storage, and dryness when in sloppy weather is phenomenal; like going from a dinghy to an ocean liner.

Like Mary Kate and yourself, I wish the AC would get back to 'real' boats, ie. monohulls. I first became in the AC when I saw the Weatherly practicing on Long Island sound as a young teenager. I think Dennis Conner pretty much destroyed the family sailors' interest in The Cup when he raced the cat against the big NZ sloop off San Diego. We live in Sailing Country, the Maryland Eastern Shore, and the local news and TV sports news never mentioned the cup races, and I haven't heard it mentioned at the marina or yacht club either. It seems as if most family sailboat owners including my self, racers or not (I raced the Catalina a lot), just don't seem to give a damn any longer! The big cats have no relationship to what they sail and enjoy.

Well done Kiwis. But, as a long time sailor, I long for a return to the mono-hulls and get away from all this new fangled technology!
