d500 focus lock

I've had the d500 for several months and have really been enjoyed it. This weekend the focal point stopped being adjustable. I have gone through the settings and tried all I can think of to no avail. I did a settings reset which moved the focal point from a corner to the center but it still will not move with either the sub selector or multi selector. Removed and replaced battery, cards, switched lenses and searched the manual and have not found anything helpful. I am hoping I did something stupid which I have overlooked and someone here can point it out to me but am afraid it may be need repair. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Neither lenses nor camera are set on manual focus.

I hate to sound obvious, but did you inadvertently set the focus point switch to lock?

Yes it does sound obvious but that's is exactly what the problem was and with all my other fussing around I overlooked it. Like I said a stupid mistake. Thanks for you prompt reply and help. Maybe someday I'll grow up and not be such a scatter brain.

Right there in your city of Billings you have access to an experienced Nikon user - UHH member, "MT Shooter" who is the owner of Carter's Camera Cottege, 703 Grand Avenue. I'm confident he may be able to help you solve your riddle. NOTE: He has recently had multiple surgeries and may be moving a little slowly or may not be in the store full time. But if you are patient, he should be able to sort things out. /Ralph

Yeah that was going to be my next move tomorrow morning. Fortunately "rgrenaderphoto" spotted my obvious oversight and solved my problem. Thanks for your suggestion. I have bought from camera cottage and really respect MT Shooter's knowledge and assistance.

Do you have the selector on the back currently set to L?

Yes I did and can't believe I didn't notice it in all my fussing around. Thanks for response.

Your welcome. I have done that more than a couple of times, my thumb moves that lever and I am unaware of it.

That's what I was going to suggest...because I did the same on my D800.

A related problem I had was with the focusing point moving about the screen on its own. Turned out I was pressing the multiselector through the camera strap which was in the way.

Another DAH moment. Every time I think my cameras broke it's something I moved or didn't reset from a previous shoot.

The button on this camera must move easily. I have done it myself on mine and it has never happened on my other Nikons. Luckily I figured it out before I tore out my last hair! :-)
