I like backlit photos and there is much to like in this simple composition, but I'm having trouble with the darkness of the rest of the image. Maybe it's my own eyesight or my own problems with interpretation but I keep peering into the dark parts to find out what I'm missing there. It seems well captured which isn't easy with backlit yellow flowers. I like it best cropped into portrait mode eliminating the right bloom and sticking with the backlit one and the buds that enfold it.

Noted, I have a portrait version cropped as suggested. I have about 10 versions, this is one cropped version.
Also, as has been noted before, I prefer photos on the darker side.

It's a good image...I lean with minniev about the crop and find your second enjoyable, however for me it seems an optical illusion whether I'm looking at a cup or a cone of a flower...hope that makes sense randomeyes..
I like it. A lot. Moody, sweet.

Lovely light and I think the colors are really appealing. I do think that the flower on the right is more of a distraction than an asset.

Love it! In my darker, pre-dawn living room it looks great at this exposure: mysterious, engaging. Lighter would be less compelling for me, and I feel the same about cropping. For my own interests, the opening shot is perfectly wonderful.

Even better. This looks great.

Thanks one and all, I am a sucker for all things that are backlit.
I much prefer the cropped image. To me the yellow flower is the star of the shot. The cropped for me makes that happen. BTW love the backlighting

I like the cropped version better. The verticals and colors are beautiful. The only aspect that bothers me, and I'm not sure if I'm right, is I think that the front bud seems sharper than the yellow flower. And, if the the yellow flower is the subject of the image, then it should be what's sharpest. I may be wrong with my ancient eyes, and perhaps someone else may correct me.

Your cropped version is a much better image. The separation between subject and background is just muted enough to be atttractive and helps make the bloom pop.
