The flash on my a330 is rather puny. At ISO 800 and f5.6 it is effective to 16 feet. I want greater range and the ability to shoot at wider apertures for greater depth of field. I do not anticipate using the flash off camera, so wireless connection is not that important to me. I want it mainly for birds and other small critters. Don't want to break the bank either. Any suggestions are appreciated.
If you shoot with wider apertures, you get a smaller depth of field! If shooting mainly birds and small critters, having the flash off-camera is pretty much essential (you're just not going to be able to move you and your camera close enough to be in flash-range all the time! No flash will break the bank! (although there are nice and cheap options)! You need to make a "list of specs" (for yourself), what you want in a flash. start from there and start checking out all the different models that your camera maker offers for your camera , then you can compare 3rd party offerings!
