suggest you look at the non DX comparable Nikon lens- its VRII & a sharp lens PLUS you will be using center of the lens in the DX camera. I have this lens with a 7200 its my walk around lens. Good Luck
The FX version you refer to is an old design, like 10 years or more. Despite the center of lens argument it is not as sharp at 300mm as the new AF-P lens. I have both lenses as well as the 300mm f4 VR PF. The 70-300mm FX lens is very noticeably soft at 300mm, which one can work around by skillful sharpening in post or shooting below 250mm. I was happy with it for years, until I gathered $$ to get the superb 300mm f4. But starting from scratch I would get the AF-P for DX. At less than $200 for gray it is a screaming bargain. But the buyer MUST do a careful AF Fine Tune; my copy requires +8 to get the sharpness I describe.
