Interesting… of 45 unique posters to date- 19 own a 28-300 lens- Nikon or Tamron
19 posters make no claim to owning a 28-300 lens of any manufacture
and seven declare they do NOT own a 28-300 lens.

As we all know, UHH is a forum for discussion of photography, related subjects, a few off the wall subjects but it is, primarily, a structure sharing images. In the matter of the 28-300mm lens’ use as a “walk around lens” I suggest we compare the output of those promoting the lens to those with other ideas.

With that in mind, I assessed all posters on this topic, as either an owner of the lens, or they do not own the lens. Those making no clear statement of ownership are their own group.

Seven posters not owning a 28-300mm lens created 398 topics on the Hog for an average of 56.86 topics each.

Those 19 posters unclear of owning the subject lens- have created 465 topics total and thus average 24.47 topics each.

There are 19 who proudly own and use a 28-300mm lens and posted to this topic. They have created 12,980 topics for a whopping average of 683.16 topics each.

Understand, in each instance, “topics created” may or may not include original images and, admittedly, there’s no clear evidence the created topics are the result from using a 28-300mm lens. However, I suggest, based on my own experience and the experiences, habits and statements presented in this forum by 28-300mm owners, it is indeed a lens that is considerably walked around and those walking around are prolific photographers.

Granted, the 24-120 zoom is popular as are the18-200, 35 and 50mm lenses… but, I’m suspicious NONE will yield similar numbers of topics created.

That is amusing. Does it mean that owners of the 28-300 like to frequently post; or do frequent posters like to own the 28-300?

That's a dilemma of mind-crushing importance. Perhaps the government should spend a few billion studying it!

I will infer that those who own such a lens are serious about getting an image. Yes, some say, "Oh, the 28-300 is too heavy, not sharp, XXX is a better choice..." and that's fine for them... but the numbers speak for themselves, all those "lighter, sharper, 'better'" lenses apparently don't get out much. Or, if they do, not many results are posted here.
I own quite a few lenses- it'd take me a while to list them- but the 28-300 is what I use most often... though the 17-35 is a close second. Neither lens is small or light and nobody says either is the sharpest in their focal range. Funny thing, not once, after hundreds of thousands of exposures have I ever thought, "Gee, I wish that lens was a little sharper." I have said, "Gee, I wish I'd done a better job of holding, composing and exposing..."

If one accepts the premise that members post images to this forum as a mechanism to share, grow, learn and improve their photographic skills and talents, then, "Yes," 28-300 owners post more frequently because owners of the 28-300 do more "topic worthy photography" irrespective of the lens actually used, than those that do not own a 28-300... that is, as represented by the group posting in this thread.

Just thought I'd say that I have just bought a Sigma 18-300 lens which will be the only one I use. Seems very good so far. This is my first communication on here so hello, pleased to be here! I live in mid Wales, UK. 82 years old and born again, born again biker! Mick.

I have the 24-120/4 that was meant for travel, but honestly have never used it (it came with a camera body). Every time I travel, I take two or three primes, usually a 24 (Nikon) or 28 (Leica) and a 50 and never really wish for anything more. For traveling light I split the middle and just mount a 35 (or stick with a 50).

I should pack up that 24-120 for sale.

If you are not gonna use it sell it to someone who will. My copy is very sharp and stays on my D750 unless I am birding with a tele-zoom or shooting macro stuff. 2nd shot is a crop of the first and still acceptable. D750, 24-120 f/4 ED VR, 1/500 f/11 @24mm ISO200.

BTW she won the smallest fish contest.
Pic 3-4 shot with a Coolpix L530 "Bridge" camera. The Northern pike is one of the bigger ones this trip.

I love my 24-120. Very sharp and lighter than the 28-300.
