I read where Pros use Back Button Focusing but when I am shooting macro free hand I am usually swaying in and out of focus on manual and trying to hit the mark on single frame or short burst. Sloppy, I know but I can't balance well anymore so I shoot like a target shooter and pull the trigger as the sight swings to the mark. I think this back button focus is for a more steady or tripod shot.
I don't use BBF for anything.
I do use BBF for my Macros when I'm outdoors but when I'm working under lights I tend to prefer to manually focus. I'll use the BBF to get me close than use live view and manual focus to zero in on the subject.

I use manual focus for macro work.
I use manual only on macro shooting, because I can easily chose where I want to focus. I do set my cameras on BBF all the time for everything else.
I have yet to get the hang of BBF. I just know its one of those things 'out there' and maybe I will use it one day, and maybe I won't .
It seems the method is more popular for non-macro shooting of moving objects.
I am left-handed and left-eyed. I tried BBF, but found it disruptive to my shooting situation. I quickly reverted back to half-plunged shutter button for A-F assist for macro. My Nikon cameras are better at focusing than my astigmatic eyesight.
I use BBF for most situations, but will switch to manual whenever I feel autofocus isn't giving me what I need.
With bbf and the situation you are describing just hold the assigned button down which will put you in the continuous mode... So your swaying will continue to cause the camera to focus on your subject... I found that works for me and yes I am Old....
I use back button focus for almost everything but I do try to use manual for macro but sometimes AF is faster and more accurate than I. With tubes I use manual as AF doesn't seem to work well on AF for me. As a point of interest on the D7100 you can assign BBF for the AE button but also the DOF button which is easier when you are forced to use just one hand. However, I do find my thumb catches on the Live View switch when using the DOF option which is annoying.
