Why is it when I click on the "mask" button, the whole image goes red? Not sure what setting I need to change. Thanks in advance :)
Go up and click the brush/pencil icon and the mask will be controlled by that function
I did that and no change. The whole image is automatically completely covered in the red mask when I click on the mask button. I have CS5
Is the whole image selected when you click on the mask? If so, alternating hitting the letter "Q" will turn it on and off.

It sounds like mask may be loading the default foreground color you have set. Look at the foreground and background colors in the lower left corner of PhotoShop, below the tools icons. See if red is the color for foreground.
I'm only guessing since my work PC doesn't have the app installed. Good luck.

I think that the mask default if no brush is preselected is to cover the entire screen.
If you have a selection active then it will fill the selection.
Thanks for the help. Yup, I needed to click on the brush first, then the mask button. You guys are life savers!!! Thanks
Easy solution, download Topaz Remask 30 day trial....make a copy layer, mark with the blue brush,,,, fill all areas with red,,, hit compute... if needed refine sections... done... see tutorial on You Tube... it has excellent edge detect so is really fast with little effort... if a purest and flog your self with PS regularly... then see above...

The Quick Mask shows everything that's unselected in red. You use the brush to paint a selection with white, or to mask it out with black. If you've already made a selection when you go into Quick Mask mode, you'll see the selected area normally and the unselected area in red. You can use tones of gray if you want partial selection. If you use a soft-edged brush, you get the effect of a feathered selection.
