Alton Sandars is a Northern California "natural" bodybuilder. The term means that he does not use steroids. He is fifty years old, works as a personal trainer and nutritional consultant in Vacaville. I met him at a bodybuilding competition because I do a lot of bodybuilding photography and I thought his face showed a lot of character. (There are a lot of bodybuilders who may have great bodies, but I am hunting for more than just a great body when I do photography.) My conversations with him have shown me that he is an intelligent person with a lot of interesting background. He has a daughter in Germany, and he speaks fluent German, having lived there for a number of years. In other words, he has a much more international outlook on things than the average American.
