My guess is your gonna stay with Nikon?
If you're willing to move, the Canon 7Dmkll can be bought for $1000 used and a used 100-400mkl for as low as $600. That is an awesome daylight nature set-up!!
Yes that's a $100 more but if you're serious it's a cheap nature combo.
When you can afford it, add a used 1.4x mkll for about $250.
You can use that camera with inexpensive but fast SD cards too!
Good luck

Canon works for me too!! I do not have the 100 - 400, but I do have the 70 - 200 f/2.8 II. Coupled with the 7D MII is an awesome combination. Occasionally, the teleconverter 2x III.

The D7500 but for $300 more when on sale, the D500 is the better choice. I just went through this decision and not unhappy at all that I got the D500.

Silly me for making a human error and missing the price in the title. Consider me properly horse whipped, tarred and feathered.

On the other hand many times when buying cameras, high grade firearms or even knives I have set a limit for myself and then gone over that limit when I found out there was a specialized item that more likely fit my needs and/or wants. For my money (maybe the O/P's as well) the D500 would be the best choice even if he had to save longer. I guess that is up to him to decide.

Dennis, I did not mean to horsewhip you! Lately there has been a spate of topics requesting suggestions for the best camera for whatever purpose with a $ limit included. Then when someone suggests a camera that is over the limit, the OP says NO, over budget. My comment was really intended to alert the OP that the D500 was over the stated budget.

I agree with you completely that it is up to the OP to decide. It was my intention to simply provide a bit more info. BTW, I have a D7200 which was purchased prior to the announcement of the D500. Had I been aware of the D500 I more than likely would have gone that route for the additional money.

Please accept my apology for any upset my comment caused you. It was most definitely meant that way.

I have been very happy with my Canon 7D mark ll. Shoot a lot of birds and can't hardly imagine a better camera for the job. It is fast and the sensor gives my lens 1.6 x s more reach.

Of course there isn't but even I have to admit that some cameras work better than others in some circumstances. I doubt I would use my Leica M9 for a sporting event.

There is really no apology necessary. I am a big boy and having gotten my ass reprimanded a few times and in a few different methods in USMC boot camp, nothing since can really hold a candle to that experience. No worries for my account. I do wonder though if you meant to say your last sentence the way it came out.

To me this was more humorous than hurtful. Let's get back to those thrilling days of yesterday and see what the OP chooses.

At that price he might sell at least one of the kids too.

D7500 no question.

I'm using mine right now for action / wildlife (working on a review) and while it's not on par with the D500, it's a noticeably better action camera than the D7200 (which I also own). Not only does it do 8FPS, it also has a much deeper buffer, Group AF, and better 3D AF. For moderate action, it's the best you can get for under $1500. That said, the D500 (I own that one too) is still a better choice for action if you can swing the extra $$.

You have to keep in mind that shooting wildlife and other fast moving subjects you will have to consider a good buffer storing capacity and a fast AF. Modern cameras have excellent AF capabilities but their buffer are different.
The camera that some of the members of the forum have recommended, the D500, should be at the top of your list but it is not cheap and most probably outside your budget. You could consider the D7200 which comes pretty close to the D500 at less price. I have never used a D7200 but all I know about it is that it is a very good camera and as a refurb it should be under your budget.
Good luck with your choice.

I hold you in high respect. You were one of a couple of members who very gently taught me to use the "quote reply" button when I was a newbie here. For that I will be forever grateful. It is also a lesson I try to pass on to others as needed.

Take care!
