Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience using third party batteries in a Canon D77?
I have read many discussions on this topic here. I was convinced that I was going to buy a Wasabi extra battery. Then I went online to purchase and saw many negative reviews from people using in a D77. I hate the thoughts of spending the money on a Canon battery however I also don't want to ruin my camera.

If you want to be accurate, that would be an EOS 77D, unless you bought a cheap Nikon knock off by mistake!

Wasabi have a good reputation generally, some others appear OK such as Power2000. Personally I prefer to stick with the Canon batteries, but the one Power2000 that I have is doing just as well as the Canon brand batteries five years later. Damage to the camera is unlikely, but could happen with any battery that isn't manufactured well.

No way they'll ruin your camera. But my experience with them on average is you'll get about half or a little more of the capacity for about a third of the cost.

Thank you for your opinion and correcting me on the model of my camera, I have only had it a week so I guess I should have looked at it before referring to it.

Normally a battery damages a device only when the battery is left in and the device is left unused for a period of time, so the user doesn't notice the battery went bad and leaked. There have been reports of third-party batteries swelling and getting stuck in a camera. I use mostly third-party batteries, including Wasabi, and I've never had that kind of experience, but it is good practice to periodically check any battery, even OEM.

Great advice. I can remember when I was a lot younger my Mom got upset with my Dad because he did just that and ruin their camera.

Yeah, I recently noticed that the batteries in the {last} camera my Dad purchased for my Mother had gone bad and leaked. She is now 92 and probably hasn't used the camera in at least five years {he died four years ago at age 93, so I'm guessing the camera is older than I realize}. I removed and dumped the batteries {AAA in this case}, but left the camera. If she were healthier and more "with it" {she is 92 and failing} this would have been a problem - in this case it was just sad.

Neither Nikon nor Canon manufacture batteries... so I guess all batteries are 3rd Party batteries!

I search for Name Brand Batteries and carefully research Consumer opinions by focusing on single star ratings to understand complaints. By avoiding the "Who the F are they brands" and buying one to try (abuse) if it passes OK if not its off to recycle and brand on the Avoid List forever.

Approach has worked for me since early in my digital experience... not just camera batteries.

I've used third party batteries in everything I can, including compact Canons. No problems, just lower cost.

I use a couple of Hahnel batteries in my Fuji X-Pro1 and they appear to be as good as the Fuji battery. No, they WON'T ruin your camera. Take note of what others use as third party and how they rate them.

That is rather a sweeping statement. No, they won't ruin your camera necessarily. I use Hahnel after market batteries and they are as good as the Fuji battery in my X-Pro1. As someone says here, you should always check batteries periodically whatever the make.

If you place a cheap battery in you camera and it goes bad and ruins you camera, you have learned you lesson, maybe.

Your comment implies that the Third Party battery badged with your cameras name will not kill your electronic device. Are you sure you believe this?

Unless you shoot Panasonic or Sanyo someone else made the battery or the cells.
