I have recently begun practicing on small birds in flight. Helpful suggestions to improve are welcomed.

Good try. These buggers are definitely tough. I looked at your EXIF and would suggest 2 things - shoot at a smaller f stop (8 or 11) and try matrix metering instead of center-weighted. According to your EXIF, your f stop was 4. That gave you a very shallow dof. A smaller aperture would bring more of the bird into focus. Just my suggestion.

You are very welcome. Just keep practicing. If you have Brian Peterson's book "Understanding Exposure", re-read it. I think it will help.
