ATTENTION: THIS IS FUN STUFF BEYOND THE NORM:
Most of us are aware of Escher and his magic drawings. There are open source programs for us poor folks and Adobe has a special one for those with CS5.5.

MathMap for plebeians requires GIMP (may work on others?) both GIMP and the MathMap downloads are free. I have given the reference for downloads and have translated a how to to simple English. My only contribution is using a magnifying glass to read the directions and retype some cookbook details.
http://www.photospiralysis.com/ is a standalone program and is best to start on. But MathMap "plugin" has many choices.
I have done several but none I wish any one but the trash-man to see. However, the reference sites contain examples.
As I said, Spiralysis is easy and you can produce an image quickly. MathMap requires a bit of pre-work as described in the cooking directions.
Good luck and have fun and we can all share our photo creations for Halloween and have fun.
Also Google in MathMap and Escher
And thank you to the
http://photoextremist.com/ for introducing me to the fact that the distortions can be do in PS (and others).
He provides many tricks and has some low cost photo trick guide books, great works.

MathMap Directions.
Assuming you have GIMP and have installed MathMap
Download and directions are here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joshsommers/sets/72157594515046947/1. Two types of photos work. One independent on black background, how you get there is your choice. The other is a square donuts. i.e. like a checker board with the inner 2x2 squares cut out and replaced by emptiness.
2. To cut hole in PS make background layer. Rt click then chose layer from background. Make transparent layer.
3. Layers/layermask/reveal
this creates a layer mask on this layer. Hole must be in center (close to).
4. Use black brush to paint center region. Save as TIFF file. Hole in this case is a square but any shape of target hole is OK.
5. Save along with transparency (not sure what this means).
Applying the Droste Effect.
1. In GIMP go to Filters/MathMap
2. Switch to values to user values in MathMap. Adjust to suit your image.
a. Inner radius, size of hole, set to about 0.25
b. Too big cuts spiral
c. Too small and there are black gaps
d. Correct value and the image is whole in the center of the hole.
3. Adjust start level parameter to 2 or 3. These values eliminate repetition of image in foreground. Check out value of 1 and this shows what the problem would be.
Good Luck and have fun
