I have a D5000 and looking to upgrade as well as have a second camera. My lenses include an AF-S Nikkor 18-105, an AF-S Nikkor 70-300 and an AF-S Micro NIKKOR 85. I feel I have something for most situations but avoid changing lens when the opportunities change quickly as don't want to drop one. Much of what I shoot is outside as my granddaughter attends an Outdoor Environmental School that moves from place to place.
The D5100 has been out for awhile and is currently on sale. It has a variable angle monitor screen, 33% more pixels and better video focus.
Nikon now was a D3200 and I would expect a D5200 is coming, but when and what will it provide over the D5100. Waiting is an option.

I'm in the "upgrade glass first" camp, but if were to get an additional body, I'd go another $350 and get the D7000: AF motor in the body, faster burst mode (6 f/sec), slightly larger viewfinder area, faster shutter speed (1/8000), a better AF system, and built-in commander mode for CLS off-camera flash.

On the Nikon.ca site, the D7000 is 1180 vs 620, a difference of $560. I don't think I would get that value out of the extra features. And I do like the adjustable LCD monitor on my D5000 for those shots that don't use the viewfinder.

Yes, people without the articulated screen don't appreciate what it does. Even though I mostly use the viewfinder I find I use the articulated screen quite often in many configurations for many purposes. I especially like it for low angle shots where I can comfortably lay the camera on the ground but also use it twisted around on tripod to compose pics that include myself and for other situations such as with the camera on my telescope. If I didn't have it I wouldn't realize how vaulable it is.

So as indicated I have the D5100 and love it. I wouldn't have a D7000 at half the price of the D5100. They have exactly the same sensor and thus can take equal photos. I don't need the features the D7100 provides, don't want the extra weight, and now couldn't do without the aticulated screen.

In particular the focusing motor in the D7100 is of no interest because I buy all modern lenses with the focusing motor in them and believe that to be a better design. I suppose if you have a lot of old glass that might be a deciding factor. I have no need for the somewhat higher fast frame rate...I usually take one shot at a time.

I bought an SB700 flash for my D5100. I hardly ever use it because of the fabulous high ISO capability of the D5100. When I do use it I am able to trigger it off camera using the D5100 built-in flash so I think the "command mode" feature is only for those who do more sophisticated things with flash; e.g. multiple off camera flash units. It works in full iTTL mode when triggered that way so I don't fully get the "command mode" thing.

I certainly don't want two batteries and don't need two cards with 64 GB cards now available (I use one 32 GB). The main about the D7100 that interests me is that it is more rugged. I wouldn't mind the brighter viewfinder but don't think it worth $500 and the other liabilities.

If they come up with a D7100 with an articulated screen I might consider it but the D5200 is likely my next camera. I too am in no hurry and although no longer intimidated (but still impressed) by all of its features I still have much to learn about how to best use the D5100.

MtnMan uses many of the same features as I do and has similar limited needs for some of the features in higher end cameras. Now if a reliable rumour could suggest when a D5200 might appear, I would be happy.

I was price comparing the D7000 to the D5100 (regular price) - I misssed the "on sale" part of your post.

go to nikonrumours.com or nikonians.com they seem up to date. A new d-400 and a d-600 are also rumoured to be coming down the pike.

I see I over anticipated a D7100...

Here's a recent effort with my D5100. (BTW I was a little creeped out when I looked at these at home yesterday and saw how the Osprey was looking right at me in ALL of them...even when it was flying away! I hope I didn't look like a fish because I could see what these guys were doing to the local trout population...not pretty.)

I just wish the D800 had the same screen as the 5100.
